Research is for Physicians? Right?
No
Associate Membership Role
in Research
Deborah Brouwer RN CNN
Research Requires a Team
Research Team
• Can be physician lead depending on the area of investigation
• Can be lead by other members of the Healthcare Team
• Can be lead by you – yes any one of us as associate members can conduct research You Need to First Identify the Area
to be Researched
• Dr Loc talked right before me about topics currently being researched in vascular access – any of those strike your fancy?
• Topics can be everyday simple tasks you think can be improved, but don’t have the data
Examples of Topics
• X‐ray exposure specific to a dialysis vascular access intervention
• Infection rates related to the set up or room turnover
• Product selection – what process should be used instead of just cost considerations?
• Impact of patient comfort measures used during VAC procedures
• Patient education done pre‐procedure: can it reduce pain and required use of medications during the procedure?

Examples of Topics- Team
Examples of Topics- Team
• AVF maturation and development of stenosis – the role of side branches? Do we ligate or not at the time of surgery? If not, then what is the role of IN/IR to treat them if impacting AVF maturation or function?
• Catheter designs and impact on hemodialysis adequacy and infection risk (especially with the new bundle and infections now cost the HD unit direct money?)
• Role of AVF mapping to assist with cannulation‐ can it be useful?
• The 2006 KDOQI Guidelines have research questions that still need answered‐ any strike your fancy? • ASDIN has a research expert to help with VA related topics‐ Did you know who the chairs that group? Prabir Roy-Chaudhury, MD, PhD
Got a Topic?
ASDIN Research Committee Mission
• To identify research areas of interest to the membership which would likely have a significant impact on the practice of interventional nephrology.
• To facilitate and advance the conduct of research activities by the membership in the above areas; especially in the context of collaborative studies.
• To disseminate important basic science, translational and clinical research findings of relevance to interventional nephrology, within the membership
So Now What?
• Collaborate with your other team members • Put the idea down on paper and draft out the issues, what do you think needs investigated, and how will you evaluate the results?
• Get help from a research mentor that has lead a research project before
• Ask your administration for help‐ they like to help people that see and issue and want to find a better solution ASDIN 8th Annual Scientific Meeting
So What Will You Need to
Get It Done?
• Get help to research the topic for prior studies. Learn what they do wrong and avoid that!!! • You may need corporate assistance because simple things like access to medical libraries can be restricted and on‐line article copies can be very expensive
Resource: www.joannabriggs.edu.au
• Get help to write a good protocol draft to establish a projected budget IRB Approval
• Studies involving animals and human subjects required approval by an Institutional Review Board or IRB
• You will need to get patient consent for research involving their care
• You will need support by your employer to get this approvals Results
• Your study results will need to be submitted for publication – ASDIN journal is a great place! • Your results could change practice!!! • You can improve the care and not just do things the same way over and over again! So What Will You Need to
Get It Done?
• Funding for your research? • Ask!!!!!
Professional societies (ASDIN/ANNA/NFK)
Your company Industry that makes the product
Conduct the Study
• Too many steps to detail out and scare you from starting the process
• You will need to get buy in and support from your entire team to conduct the study properly
• It is worth the effort! Be a Vascular Access DetectiveJoin this Bunch of VA Nerds!
