Course Content:
We begin the year focusing on History’s beginnings and reviewing some Social Studies skills. We then
travel through Ancient World History into Middle Ages Europe.
Student
Expectations:
If you want to be successful in this class you will do the following things:
1. Be on time. Be in your seat when class begins, or you will be tardy.
2. Be prepared for class. Have your binder, pen/pencil, paper, and homework
3. Be respectful to others. This includes adults and students.
4. Be ready to learn. We are going to have a great year!
Notes and
Homework:
Notes are an important part of this class. We take notes many times
throughout the week. Please keep all notes together. It is recommended paper or device for note taking
be brought to class daily. There will be times when the notes will be checked for completion and a
grade given. Have notes in a binder or notebook at all times unless told otherwise. Homework will be
assigned a couple of times per week, depending on the topic being studied. Current events will be
incorporated with class to make connections between past and present.
Writing
Expectations:
Students in my challenge class will write one multi-page typed essay per semester, at a minimum.
We will use various Document Based Questions (DBQ’s) with our writing as well as several writing
assignments to prepare for class discussions.
National History
Day Project:
All 8th grade challenge students will complete a National History Day project. The project
details and theme will be introduced in November. The completed project will be due in January.
Students may select to work as individuals or in groups of 2-3.
Late Work
Policy:
If you fail to turn in an assignment, you will have until the following day to turn it
in for 75% credit. After an out of school absence, you will have 2 days to turn in the missed homework
or set up a time with me to complete a test or quiz. Check the homework on our team webpage or with
a fellow class member for homework. It is your responsibility to make-up missed work, quizzes, or
tests.
Academic
Honesty:
It is important to take responsibility for your own work and to create a good
learning environment. Academic dishonesty, such as copying another student’s work, cheating or
plagiarism, will not be tolerated and a grade of 0% will be given for that assignment.
