Earth Model Assignment
Directions: Make a cut away, 3-D, scale model showing the earth’s interior structure.
Make you model to scale (eg., the crust is thin, some of the other layers are thick….).
Section 6.2 in your text will help, as will the handouts, notes and discussion from class.
See details below and on the grading sheet, include characteristics of each layer.
Materials: Try to use naturally occurring materials OR reuse, reduce, recycle materials
that are not “natural.” Please do not buy plastic and plastic products (example
Styrofoam) for this project. Think low budget, be creative, wrapping/packaging from
gifts and fruits and vegetables offer many possibilities.
Models must be three dimensional and show the following layers to scale (include your
scale). The layers must be labeled (with labels or names on the layers, not a key/legend).
Inner core
Outer core
Lower mantle
Upper mantle
Moho
Crust
Lithosphere
Asthenosphere
Attach a piece of paper or a card that gives the depth below the earth’s surface (not
thickness) and a brief description (use complete sentences though) of two characteristics
(other than depth) for each of the layers identified above.
The paper/card should also include your Bibliography. Bibliography requirements:
minimum of one print source and one non-print source. Don’t forget to include dates of
access for non-print sources and pages used for print sources.
