International Stage Technology Conference 2015 at
Stage|Set|Scenery from 9 to 11 June 2015 – the
programme of events at a glance
Berlin, 16 April 2015 – From 9 to 11 June 2015 experts from around the world will be
gathering to exchange knowledge and experiences at the three-day International
Stage Technology Conference. Altogether, the international conference organised by
Deutsche Theatertechnische Gesellschaft (DTHG) comprises 130 events. Topics will
include theatre planning, scenography/design, make-up, international projects,
exhibition design and museum technology, media technology and sustainability,
safety, stage technology, sound systems and lighting. Simultaneous interpreting into
English and German will be available at the events.
On 9 June 2015 at 11.30 a.m. Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the
Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, will open the symposium under the
heading of ’Theatres and cultural spaces – urban centres and their continuous
metamorphosis and cultural adaptation in the 21st century' by delivering a keynote
speech. At the symposium a variety of concepts will be presented for new theatres
and for renovating existing buildings in a number of cities, including Stuttgart,
Dresden, Karlsruhe, London and Hamburg. These projects reflect how 21st century
demands on the theatre as an important part of urban inner cities have changed.
On 10 June 2015, under the heading of 'German culture abroad – the story of the
success of German theatre technology' (for example new temples to the muses in
Asia), planning for an opera house in Dubai, the Opera Europe and the Stavanger
Concert house will be presented at the International Projects section.
Scenography and design are two new key topics featured at the conference. Papers
held by scenographers will highlight today’s demands for more and more flexibility
within the theatre landscape and put forward ideas for using renewable materials
where decoration and costumes are concerned.
On 11 June 2015, in cooperation with the Scenographers’ Association, a round table
discussing scenography and scenographers will also be taking place.
Other related key topics will include exhibition design and museum technology.
Papers will be given on these subjects, including on the design for the German
pavilion at the upcoming EXPO in Milan and the trend towards interactive adventure
parks instead of museums.
The focus on these topics will be rounded off with a special new exhibition area.
Visitors can also view the model of a baroque theatre from Bayreuth presented by
Initiative TheaterMuseum Berlin e.V. together with the exhibition entitled ’The Villingen
theatre find – baroque monastery stage magic’. Presentations of theatre technology
from past centuries will be taking place here on all three days of the fair. A tour
exploring museum exhibition technology will round off events on 10 June 2015.
The Anatomical Theatre organised by scenographers Raissa Kankelfritz and
Annamaria Münzer (Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Dresden) is a circular design
based on the Globe Theatre and has room for 75 people. Inside this special area in
Hall 4 special workshops and presentations will be taking place on the subject of
make-up, stage art, stage sculpture. Activities will include dismantling of a chain hoist.
There will be a special multimedia concert on the evening of 9 June 2015. On 11 June
2015 a special presentation will be taking place on the subject of augmented reality
for theatre productions which will also be looking at Google Glass.
Papers and presentations on the subject of media technology will round of events in
this field. Topics and events will include new technologies for video, LED and
multimedia applications, the future technology of control desks for stage managers, as

well as a meeting of stage managers on 11 June 2015.
There will be a broad focus on stage technology, with key topics including the role of
hydraulic devices in modern-day theatre. Other subjects will include developments in
retractable platforms, current demands on stage floor surfaces and the latest
developments in stage rigging equipment.
The Lighting Technology section will feature various papers on the subject of LED
lighting. The focus here will be on technical aspects as well as artistic considerations.
Thus, one of the papers will look at how LED lighting affects the work of costumiers
and scenographers.
A programme of spectacular events awaits visitors to the Safety in Action stage in Hall
3 where the topic of safety will be examined from various angles. One of the highlights
will be the conducting of real time load measurements while artists perform their acts.
Other events will also be held on the subject of crowd control, electronic
counterweight assistance and counting crowd attendance.
The SoundLab in Hall 3 promises to be another highlight. On all three days of the fair
Sennheiser, Shure, Müller-BBM, KS Audio and Gerriets will be showcasing their latest
products and inviting visitor to sample their audio quality. At the conference the ‘future
of radio frequencies’ and the ‘second digital dividend’ will be among the topics
discussed.
A programme of excursions to various studios and event venues will provide trade
visitors with an opportunity to directly experience the practical uses of audio, lighting
and studio technology. On 12 June 2015, the day after the show, excursions will be
taking place to Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb), the Art Department Studio
Babelsberg, Big Image Systems, the Friedrichstadtpalast and to the building site of
the State Opera Unter den Linden.
