Mouth
 The opening in the lower part of the mouth
which food is taken down.
Esophagus
 The part of the body which connects to the
stomach.
Stomach
 The internal organ in which the first part of
digestion occurs.
Small Intestine
 The part of the intestine that runs between
the stomach and the large intestine.
Large Intestine
 The large intestine is the second part of the
alimentary canal.
Liver
 A large organ in the abdomen process.
Appendix
 An opening into the lower end of the large
intestine.
Pancreas
 A large gland behind the stomach.
Gall Bladder
 The small sac-shaped organ beneath the
liver.
Enzymes
 A substance produced by a living organism.
Bile/Bile duct
 The duct that conveys bile from the liver and
the gallbladder to the duodenum
Mucus
 A slimy substance that is in the nose and
sometimes in your throat.
Chemical Digestion
 Digestion is the mechanical and chemical
breaking down of food into smaller
components.
Absorption
 The process or action by which one thing
absorbs.
Mechanical Digestion
 The breaking down of food using the teeth.
Salivary Amylase
 Amylase is present in human saliva, where it
begins the chemical process.
villi
 Any of numerous minute projections set
closely together on a surface.
Gastric Juices
 A thin, clear, virtually colorless fluid secreted
by the stomach glands.
Duodenum
 The first part of the small intestine.
Chyme
 The acidic fluid that passes from the
stomach to the small intestine.
