Digestive system By: Edgar Barriga Mouth The opening in the lower part of the mouth which food is taken down. Esophagus The part of the body which connects to the stomach. Stomach The internal organ in which the first part of digestion occurs. Small Intestine The part of the intestine that runs between the stomach and the large intestine. Large Intestine The large intestine is the second part of the alimentary canal. Liver A large organ in the abdomen process. Appendix An opening into the lower end of the large intestine. Pancreas A large gland behind the stomach. Gall Bladder The small sac-shaped organ beneath the liver. Enzymes A substance produced by a living organism. Bile/Bile duct The duct that conveys bile from the liver and the gallbladder to the duodenum Mucus A slimy substance that is in the nose and sometimes in your throat. Chemical Digestion Digestion is the mechanical and chemical breaking down of food into smaller components. Absorption The process or action by which one thing absorbs. Mechanical Digestion The breaking down of food using the teeth. Salivary Amylase Amylase is present in human saliva, where it begins the chemical process. villi Any of numerous minute projections set closely together on a surface. Gastric Juices A thin, clear, virtually colorless fluid secreted by the stomach glands. Duodenum The first part of the small intestine. Chyme The acidic fluid that passes from the stomach to the small intestine.
