MARK ANTONY BIRTH AND DEATH Bir th Death Born April 20th 83 BC Died August 1st 30 BC He was born in the City of Rome Died in Alexandria, Ptolemaic Kingdom Was 53 years old. FAMILY Mother was Lucius Caesar, while his father was Marcus Antonius Creticus. He had two brothers, those being Gaius and Lucius. His father was given power only because he was unable to abuse or use the power properly. His father died early on in Antony’s life. His mother remarried, marrying Publius Cornelius Lentulus, a patrician. Due to the extravagance of his lifestyle and gambling, left him and his new family with huge debts. He was killed in 63 BC. Antony became a heavy gambler in his adulthood, not become involved with anything unless it had to do with gambling away fortunes. FAMILY TREE The family tree of Mark Antony and beyond ACCOMPLISHMENTS When Caesar died, Antony was fighting a war on two fronts. One was against Caesar’s killer, and the other was against those who wanted to avenge Caesar. He could have very well assured leadership had Octavian, Caesar’s nephew had not appeared, claiming the right of heir, demanding Caesar’s political power for his own. In the following months, Antony gained strength with the armies on in the Western Roman Empire. Octavian however realized the government was using him. He formed an alliance with Antony and Lepidus, forming what is now known as the second Triumvirate. MAJOR EVENTS IN LIFE Formed the Second Triumvirate. Married Cleopatra in 41 BC. Fought in Gaul under Caesar’s command. Was the right hand man of Caesar. Lost the battle in Actium, Greece, eventually committing suicide. MAJOR EVENTS Participated in Gaul alongside Julius Caesar for most the campaign. Attempted to stay in Gaul for the whole campaign, but the senate, seeing he was something of a Loyal Lapdog to Julius Caesar, denied his request, already fearful at the power Caesar was building. Won military victories against barbarians in Gaul and enemies in Rome itself. Married Cleopatra and had three children. They never actually found where Mark Antony’s body is… HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Carried Caesar’s legacy after his death. Paved the way for Octavian to rise to power. Was leader of Rome for a short while before Octavian and after Caesar. Was a political figure who campaigned the rights of lower class Roman Citizens. With the Triumvirate in power, Antony managed many military victories. Married Cleopatra, further cementing her as a celebrated legend in Roman history. Served in Gaul, conquering the territory at Caesar’s side. Was very popular with the vast majority of Rome and her people.
