We stage up to 30 productions at our South Bank home each year, ranging from re-imagined classics – such as Greek tragedy and Shakespeare – to modern masterpieces and new work by contemporary writers and theatre-makers. The work we make strives to be as open, as diverse, as collaborative and as national as possible. Much of that new work is researched and developed at the NT Studio: we are committed to nurturing innovative work from new writers, directors, creative artists and performers. Equally, we are committed to education, with a wide-ranging Learning programme for all ages in our new Clore Learning Centre and in schools and communities across the UK. The National's work is also seen on tour throughout the UK and internationally, and in collaborations and co-productions with regional theatres. Popular shows transfer to the West End and occasionally to Broadway; and through the National Theatre Live programme, we broadcast live performances to 2,000 cinemas in 50 countries around the world. From September 2015, National Theatre: On Demand in Schools will make three acclaimed, curriculum-linked productions free to stream on demand in every secondary school in the country. Online, the NT offers a rich variety of innovative digital content on every aspect of theatre. We do all we can to keep ticket prices affordable and to reach a wide audience, and use our public funding to maintain artistic risk-taking, accessibility and diversity. NT Productions As a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Theatre, NT Productions is responsible for managing and maintaining to a high level of presentation, work that has a commercial future beyond its life on the South Bank. Currently, these productions are War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and Jane Eyre. Along with other projects currently in development additionally NTP presents work which shows the NT’s productions in venues other than the South Bank, with a view to diversifying the core NT attendees and encouraging a new audience for National Theatre shows. Following two successful runs at the National Theatre, War Horse transferred to the New London Theatre in the West End in March 2009, and after 8 record-breaking years in London ended its run in March 2016. A UK tour will follow, commencing Autumn 2017 and a Mandarin language production is currently touring in China. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time continues its open-ended run at the Gielgud Theatre and start a second UK and Ireland tour in January 2017. Jane Eyre will start a UK tour in Spring 2017. Purpose of Job To dress costumes for the actors in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the Gielgud Theatre while keeping to the standard of the Designer’s specification. Duties and Responsibilities As a Dresser, you will be expected to: Assist the actors in performances with their costumes, including quick changes. Set out every part of each costume including accessories in the dressing rooms and other parts of the Theatre where costume changes are to occur. Attend technical, dress and costume understudy rehearsals for the purpose of observing and learning new productions and to be available to the actor/actors allocated to them on or off stage as appropriate. Dress male and female actors as allocated by the Wardrobe Supervisor before the performance. Deal with emergency repairs to costumes using a small basic repair kit to be provided and carried during performances. Recognise where maintenance work needs to be carried out on a costume and return it to the Supervisor or Assistant in the relevant Wardrobe with a note of the maintenance requirements. Help actors to change at the end of performance and to hang up their costumes, returning appropriate costumes and laundry to the Wardrobe. Ensure that all costumes allocated to the post holder and all costumes in the dressing rooms in which they work are kept in a tidy and secured manner. Report any losses and unsafe practices in dressing rooms to the Wardrobe Supervisor or Assistant. Write up and maintain clear and concise notes of all the costumes allocated to him/her. These notes will consist of (a) costume plot, (b) pre-set notes, (c) daily laundry and (d) notes enabling casuals or other Wardrobe Staff to cover, without prior knowledge of the production. All these notes should be kept up to date with copies available in Wardrobe. This task requires typing and computer skills. Ensure that security, safety and good housekeeping procedures for the department are properly carried out. Support the National’s communications objectives by sharing information with your manager, team and colleagues as appropriate, whilst respecting confidentiality, so that you and your colleagues have all the information you need to perform your duties effectively. Comply with the National’s Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety policies at all times. Person Specification Experience of dressing for a busy professional production. The ability to iron and wash clothes and clean shoes. Basic sewing skills. The ability to work under minimum supervision and adapt work in accordance with performance requirements. The ability to work as part of a large team. The ability to work with actors and other theatre staff. Good communication skills. A high level of self motivation. Outline of Terms and Conditions Title of Post: Dresser (Curious Incident Gielgud) – Fixed term contract Duration: Fixed term contract dates to be discussed & confirmed. (Expected to be between 3 and 6 months) Contract: SOLT/BECTU Agreement. Hours: 8 shows per week. Show call 4 hours. Salary: As per SOLT BECTU Agreement. Currently £48.70 per show (4 hour call) Annual Leave: 28 days including Bank Holidays, paid pro rata for the duration of this agreement. Probationary Period: 12 weeks Pension: Other Benefits: The National Theatre operates a Stakeholder Pension scheme with Legal & General.
