Math Vocabulary 3-1
Math Vocabulary Terms: Topic 2
1. addends- Numbers added together to give a sum.
Example:
7 + 5 = 12
addend + addend = sum
6. difference- The answer when subtracting two numbers.
Example: 7 – 2 = 5

2. factors- Numbers that are multiplied to give a product.
Example: 3 x 8 = 24
factor x factor = product
3. product- The answer to a multiplication problem.
Example: 3 x 8 = 24

1. dividend - The number to be divided.
Example: 30 ÷ 6 = 5
2. divisor – The number by which another number is divided.
Example: 30 ÷ 6 = 5
3. quotient – The answer to a division problem.
Example: 30 ÷ 6 = 5

1. halves – Two equal parts of a whole.
2. thirds – Three equal parts of a whole.
3. fourths – Four equal parts of a whole.
4. fifths – Five equal parts of a whole.
5. sixths – Six equal parts of a whole.
6. eighths – Eight equal parts of a whole.
7. tenths – Ten equal parts of a whole.
8. twelfths – Twelve equal parts of a whole.
9. fraction – A symbol that names a part of a whole, a part of a set, or location on a number
line.
Example: 1/2, 2/3
10. numerator – The number above the fraction bar in a fraction; it tells how many equal
parts.
11. denominator – The number below the fraction bar in a fraction; it tells the total number
of equal parts.
12. unit fraction – A fraction with a numerator of 1.
Example: ½
13. benchmark fractions – Commonly used fractions such as 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4.
14. mixed number – A number with a whole number part and a fraction part.
Example: 2 ¾
