Assignment # 5 (January)
Helpful Hints (B Assignments)
Before you start. If you have seen this page, please e-mail Mr Thorne and indicate
that this page is actually up and running. Thank You. [email protected]
1.
Remember your order of operation rules. Do the subtraction before the
addition.
2.
Divide 287 by all 5 possible answers. Which answer has “no” remainder?
3.
Think, “How many times would 0.5 (50 cents) fit into 35.5 (35 dollars and
fifty cents)?
4.
First, convert all values to eighths: 1 = 8/8; ½ = 4/8; ¼ = 2/8. Then add up the
total number of eighths.
5.
Work out all 5 answers (a,b,c,d,e) You are looking for the answer that is
ODD.
6.
Remember the total number of degrees in EVERY triangle = 180.
7.
Convert 4/5 to hundredths by dividing 4 by 5. Convert 81 % to hundredths
by dividing 81 by 100. Leave 0.801 as a decimal. Compare all three decimal values.
8.
To find the average, first find the sum of all the values and then divide by
how many values there are. In this case there are 5 values, right.
9.
Organize (put in alphabetical order) every trip. Use the letters to avoid
duplication.
10.
Use your imagination OR draw in a dotted line that creates 4 equal squares,
which would have the very same areas.
11.
Draw a diagram and shade in the squares that touch the wall.
12.
Look for a pattern OR play the game with imaginary friends. You do have
some don’t you?
13.
First make a fraction. The numerator (top number) is the number of squares,
shaded in. The denominator (bottom number) is the total number of small squares.
Convert that fraction, to a fraction with a denominator of 100. That is your
percentage.
14.
First find out what 12 squared and 13 squared equals. Then eliminate any
answers NOT between those two answers. Next, find out which remaining answers
that are EVEN numbers. Next, eliminate any answers which do NOT contain a “5”.
Next, eliminate any answers that can be NOT be divided by 3 (leaving no
remainder). Your answer MUST suit ALL of the criteria. Only one answer is
possible.
15.
The “probability” would be the number of green cubes compared to the total
number of cubes. Once this “fraction” is established, reduce it to lowest terms.
16.
First summarize the results of the 5 people. Remember that speed =
distance divided by time.
17.
If the first number in the sequence is 2 and the third is 9, the second number
in the sequence must be 7. The sequence is thus: 2, 7, 9, 16, …?
18.
From the diagram, blondes represent 30% of the 600 people. Find 10% and
then multiply that by 3 to find 30%. There are several other ways to find 30% of
600. Check the mental math lesson also.
19.
The entire rectangle has an area of 4 x 14, right. Subtract from that, the
area of the 2 triangles. To find the area of one triangle, remember that
base x height divided by 2 equals the area. In this diagram the base,
MUST be 7cm, for both triangles. The height for both MUST also be 4
cm.
20.
The first 9 odd, positive integers have a sum of 81. This implies that the sum
of each column is 81/3 = 27. Use that sum (27) to figure out each letter.
Example: B = 13 + 3 + ? (whatever you need to have a sum of 27, right) Try 11.
