Common Core 4th Grade Math Vocabulary Fractions and Decimals decimal- A number with one or more digits to the right of the decimal point Example: 3.47 decimal fraction- A decimal fraction is a fraction where the denominator (the bottom number) is a power of ten (such as 10, 100, 1000, etc). 43/100 is a decimal fraction and it can be shown as 0.43 decimal point- A symbol used to separate dollars from cents in money and to separate the ones place from the tenths place in decimals Example: 342.78 Mixed Numbers- denominator- The number below the bar in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are in the whole. Example: 5 8 denominator equivalent fractions- Two or more fractions that name the same amount Example: 1 = 2 2 = 4 Equivalent fraction 3 6 factors- A number that is multiplied by another number to find a product Examples: 4 x 7 = 28 The factors are 4 and 7. improper fraction- A fraction where the numerator (the top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (the bottom number). In other words, it is top-heavy. Example: 5/3 (five thirds) and 9/8 (nine eighths) are improper fractions mixed number- A number represented by a whole number and a fraction Example: 2 ½ 4¾ Hundredth- One part of something divided into 100 equal parts. 1/100th Example: 1 penny is a hundredthth of 1 dollar numerator- The number above the bar in a fraction that tells how many parts of the whole are being considered Example: 4 numerator 5 proper fraction- A fraction where the numerator (the top number) is less than the denominator (the bottom number). Example: 1/4 (one quarter) and 5/6 (five sixths) are proper fractions. - tenth- One part in a ten equal parts. 1/10th Example: 1 dime is a tenth of 1 dollar unit fraction- A fraction where the top number (the "numerator") is 1 Example: 1 4 1 6 1 8 whole number- One of the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, . . . The set of whole numbers goes on without end.
