Why study Sociology
at Monash?
Monash Sociology is one of the largest sociology programs in
Australia and there are more than 80 sociologists working
throughout Monash. Monash is currently ranked among the
world’s best sociology departments for our research (QS
university rankings). Our stimulating undergraduate units are
taught by award-winning lecturers and our units regularly rank
among the very best at Monash for quality and interest.
A VITAL SOCIAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINE
Exciting Career Prospects
The focus of sociological teaching and
research is the study of contemporary
societies in a global context.
Sociology graduates have knowledge in key
social issues, excellent research skills and the
capacity to apply and integrate discrete sets
of knowledge in order to identify and respond
to complex social problems.
We investigate diverse human groups,
communities, institutions and organisations.
Sociologists focus on social structures, cultures
and processes of change. We examine class,
gender, ethnicity, power and culture to
understand the differences in how people live,
think and feel. Our wide range of units are
designed to provide students with the
opportunity to explore broad theoretical and
methodological issues.
THE NATURAL HOME OF
GENDER STUDIES
Gender studies is an exciting interdisciplinary
field of inquiry broadly concerned with
questions of gender, sexuality and culture.
The sociology major has a Gender Studies
stream, the only dedicated program of its kind at
Monash. Students can complete a specialisation
in gender studies by taking gender-focussed
units at each year level.
Students completing the Sociology major have
made careers in government and the private
sector. Common destinations include the federal
and Victorian public service (e.g. the Department
of Families, Housing, Community Services and
Indigenous Affairs), research organizations
(e.g. Murdoch Children’s Research Institute),
and NGOs both locally and overseas.
KEY research
Sociologists at Monash conduct cutting-edge
research on the environment, health, gender,
youth and cultural diversity. For example,
our youth research focuses on the ways young
people respond to – and create – new conditions
of social and economic life in the twenty-first
century. We explore the meanings and impacts
of globalisation, new media and technology, the
new transitions environment and shifts in work/
study patterns, relationships and self-identity
and citizenship for youth today.
Australia ■ China ■ India ■ Italy ■ Malaysia ■ South Africa
Our gender research examines popular culture
and issues such as vanity, consumption, social
media and sex work. We study families and
intimate life especially new modes of kinship,
partnering and migration. We undertake research
on cultural diversity in many forms including
multiculturalism, migration and religious and
sexual diversity. Our research sits at the
cutting-edge of current debates on diversity
and social inclusion.
Health and society is a strong research theme
in Sociology too. We undertake innovative
research on health and medical technologies;
health and illness experiences and public health.
Environmental sociology is a rapidly growing
area of research where we focus on urban water,
sustainability and the global challenge of creating
more livable cities.
