at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.
Mortality and Length of Stay by Heart Defect and Operation
The most recent report (fall 2014) from the Society of Thoracic
Surgeons (STS) National Congenital Heart Surgery Database ranks
the pediatric heart surgery program at Penn State Hershey Children’s
Hospital among the Top 15 in the country in survival following
pediatric heart operations. These results have been achieved utilizing
a multi-disciplinary team of pediatric specialists including heart
surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, critical care physicians,
neonatologists, nursing staff, and technologists in heart-lung bypass
and respiratory care.

Heart Surgery program
• Two pediatric and congenital heart surgeons who are both
board-certified in cardiothoracic and congenital heart surgery,
with a total of thirty-nine years of experience.
• Dedicated pediatric cardiac operating room and four pediatric
cardiac anesthesiologists
• Intraoperative transesophogeal echocardiography and
neuromonitoring for all cases.
• A dedicated pediatric cardiac care unit staffed by eight pediatric
critical care physicians, 24/7. All rooms are private and have
facilities for a family member to stay throughout the hospital stay.
• Fourteen pediatric cardiologists including specialists in
diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization, arrhythmia,
echocardiography, cardiac MRI, CT scan, obesity, hypertension,
exercise testing, cardiovascular wellness, and general cardiology.

to operating room (hybrid room) for diagnostic, interventional, and
electrophysiology procedures.
• Extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) for emergency life
support available 24/7.
