3. Electrocardiography Reading for the DMC
Average of four-2 hr slots a month, approximately 12000 ECG’s annually
4. Digital Transition of Harper Echo Lab
Responsible for conceiving and implementing analog (video tape) to Digital transition of
the Echo Lab, upgrading imaging equipment and implementing electronic reporting. The
University Lab offers “state of the art” services such as 3-D imaging. Tissue Doppler,

Tissue synchronization, strain and speckle tracking imaging. Electronic reporting was
also phased in allowing for efficient, timely and cost-effective transmission of echo
reports to the hospital database.

Responsible for coordinating Physicals and Stress echo testing as part of the annual
preseason screening mandated by the NGA for professional basketball players. This is a
major undertaking, held annually at the Palace of Auburn Hills, entails transportation of
echo machines, treadmills, etc to the Palace, an all day affair starting with physicals,
culminating with exercise stress testing for all players, subs and coaches. This is a high
profile, prestigious, gratuitous service that the DMC provides and is coordinated by me
that incidentally received wide press coverage this year (Detroit Free Press).

Echo Lab Interaction: Shoulder to shoulder performance and interpretive instruction to
Cardiology Fellowship trainees throughout the year. Extensive time commitment to this activity,
involves technology updates, digital processing, special techniques and instrument handling etc.
Resident Teaching: Regular formal Cardiology Series lectures and Board Review 4-6 sessions
during the academic year. Particular focus on Arrhythmia Management, ECG interpretation
and clinical exam skills. Training of interested residents in echo interpretation during monthly
noninvasive rotation. Research Mentor for residents conducting cardiology related research.

COURSE/ CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
Cardiology Core Curriculum Document
Spearheaded effort to develop an extensive and comprehensive Core Curriculum for the
Cardiology Fellowship. This extensive document was compiled and serves as the official
guideline document and course syllabus for the Fellowship training program.
Fellowship Policy Manual
Compiled a complete set of documents that outline the Fellow operations, responsibilities and
code of conduct in accordance with ACGME guidelines. This document details rules and

regulations relating to duty hours, order writing, moonlighting, relationship to private faculty,
and due process.
Booklet for the Applicant
Compiled a booklet that is handed out to the applicant that comes for an interview with the
department. It outlines the responsibilities of the fellow once they enter into the program.
Outlines the clinical rotation, echo, nuclear, EP, and cath rotation.
Monthly Conference Schedule
Relates to assembling and planning relevant conference topics, lectures and speakers for
monthly didactics including Cardiology Grand Rounds
In-service Training Exam 2006-present
Instrumental in developing an annual Medical Knowledge assessment instrument to help
longitudinally evaluate/monitor Fellow training and process
Monthly Structured Testing 2007-present
Responsible for and executing and developing this knowledge assessment metric used to monitor
trainee process in the field of Cardiology based on preassigned syllabus based on a core
curriculum. (Entails setting ~50 multiple choice questions on a peaessigned topic).
Performance tracking and remediation of areas of weakness now possible with this tool.
Spectacular results with 100% passage rates in General Cardiology. Echocardiography and
Nuclear Cardiology Boards, activity highly regarded by trainees.
MCQ Tests designed and completed include:
 Valvular HD and Endocarditis
 Congestive Heart Failure
 Electrophysiology
 Pericardial Diseases
 Pulmonary Hypertension
Each of these tests entails a set of 50 MCQ’s on the assigned topic from Braunwalds Textbook of
Cardiology, are exclusively for our program and is a very time consuming exercise. Over 90%
of the questions sets in aggregate were developed by me. We use the results to monitor Fellow
training and these become part of the performance record in their files.
Cardiology Fellowship Accreditation: In 2008 the WSU/DMC Adult Cardiovascular
Fellowship trading Program underwent a site visit for continuing accreditation. As
Program Director, I was directly responsible for safeguarding our accreditation status.
Preparation for this visit was exhaustive and thorough. We were awarded continuing
ACGME accreditation for an additional 5 years without a single citation: a remarkable
achievement for the program, unprecedented in my tenure as Program Director. The
Program can boast of 100% passage rate in the Annual ABIM Cardiology Board Exams,
National Board of Echocardiography Exams, the American Nuclear Cardiology Society
and the Society for Cardiac CT (SCCT)Exams. Two of our graduating Fellows landed
prestigious Interventional Fellowship positions at the Massachusetts General Hospital and

Mayo Clinic Interventional Programs, testifying to the caliber of trainees graduating from
our Program.
