PREDIABETES/DIABETES NUTRITION GUIDELINES HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES PROMOTE GOOD NUTRITION Carbohydrates=Energy Carbohydrates provide energy as sugar or glucose for your body. Too much carbohydrate can raise your blood glucose too high. Carbohydrate foods are grains, fruit, milk, yogurt, desserts and sweets. Protein Builds and repairs body tissues. Protein does not affect blood sugars. Protein foods are meat and meat substitutes. Fat Insulates the body and protects our organs. Too much fat promotes weight gain and many health issues. Fat comes from animal based foods, oils, spreads, nuts and seeds. Vitamins and Minerals Help carbohydrates, protein and fats work in our body. Vegetables and fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals. MEAL PLANNING Do not skip meals; eat at least 3 times per day. Eat about the same time every day. Choose foods from each food group.
