New Curriculum edition A guide for children and parents Welcome to your new booklet explaining all about the updates to our exciting Mathematics challenge. There are 10 different levels for you to try and achieve. Each level will have a number of key maths challenges to practise at home and then be tested on in school. Every time you prove to your teacher you can successfully do the different skills within each level, you will receive a certificate and advance to the next level. The levels Circle Semi-Circle Triangle Oblong Pentagon Hexagon Heptagon Octagon Nonagon Decagon The shape up in maths levels are linked to the key objectives from the new curriculum that teachers want children to be able to do mentally. They are important skills that you should know off by heart or be able to work out very quickly. The aim will be to have a shape up in maths day every half-term, giving you approximately 6 weeks to practise the skills. Good luck and enjoy the challenge! £4.65 = £5.35 Start at £4.65 and add on 35p to reach £5 Then add on £5 to reach £10 Add the £5 and 35p to make £5.35 These are the skills that you will need to practise to help you achieve Nonagon Level: Be able to double, halve, add and subtract decimals with up to 2 decimal places within 10 seconds Be able to carry out money adjusting problems within 15 seconds Learn to convert between any unit of measurement using multiplication and division by 10, 100 or 1000 Be able to double, halve, add decimal places Learn Double 2.34 = 4.68 Half of 6.46 = 3.23 Add 2.45 + 3.26 = 5.71 Subtract 3.78 – 1.54 = 2.24 and subtract any decimal with 2 4.56 = 9.12 12.74 = 25.48 8.72 = 4.36 16.52 = 8 .26 3.78 + 4.63 = 8.41 7.23 – 3.67 = 3.56 You will get unseen examples to calculate within 10 seconds Be able to carry out money adjusting problems within 15 seconds Learn £2.99 x 3 = £8.97 £3.98 x 2 = £7.96 £4.95 x 5 = £24.75 £ 5.97 x 3 = £ 17.91 You should call the value to the nearest pound and then adjust your answer at the end by how much extra you added Example £2.99 x 3 – call the £2.99 three pounds instead Then do £3 x by three to make £9 But you add an extra 1p three times, so you need to subtract 3p from £9 – this make as a final total of £8.97 You will get unseen money problems to adjust Convert any unit of measurement using multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 or 1000 Learn 10 mm = 1cm 100 cm = 1m 1000m = 1 km 1000g = 1 kg 1000ml = 1L So 50mm = 5cm 600cm = 6m 3000m = 3km 2500g = 2.500Kg 3700ml = 3.700L These are the skills that you will need to practise to help you achieve Decagon Level: Be able to multiply two by one digit numbers mentally within 15 seconds Be able to find 10%, 25% or 50% of any value within 10 seconds Be able to adjust near multiples to allow two by two digit multiplication within 15 seconds Be able to multiply two digit numbers by a one digit number mentally using partitioning within 15 seconds Learn 15x6 = 90 23 x4 = 92 35 x6 = 210 47 x 4 = 188 You need to multiply the tens first and then multiply the units. Finally add the two parts back together Example 35 x 6 = 210 Start with 30 x 6 = 180 Then 5 x 6 = 30 Finally 180 + 30 = 210 Be able to find 10%, 25% or 50% of any number within 10 seconds Learn 10% of 64 = 6.4 10% of 12.5 = 1.25 (just divide by ten and move the digits one place) 25% of 48 = 12 25% of 86 = 21.5 (just halve it and halve it again) 50% of 92 = 46 50% of 12.68 = 6.34 (just halve it) You will also get some unseen percentages Be able to adjust near multiples of ten to help mentally multiply two by two digit numbers Learn 21 x 12 = 252 19 x 13 = 247 32 x 15 = 480 You need to adjust the number to the nearest ten to make the calculation easier Example 21 x 12 = 252 First call 21 twenty and then multiply it by 12 to make 240 Then add one more 12 (because we only did 20 x 12 so far and we need to do 21 x 12) so 240 + 12 = 252 You will also get unseen examples to calculate
