Washington Dental Service Job Description Database Administrator II SUMMARY: Operate as a member of the SQL database team responsible for installation and configuration, security management, performance analysis, capacity management, database replication and backups, disaster recovery validation, and performing related duties as needed or assigned. This is an on-call position rotating with other team members. On-call duties include but are not limited to supporting SLAs for production OLTP and EDW systems, working extra hours when needed and responding to on-call pages as required. The database management team is responsible for the design, build, operation and support of data systems within the Washington Dental Service infrastructure. This includes data model design and review, system design and review, system implementation, process development, patch and code deployment, database code review and code development. This position is primarily focused on the operational aspects of database administration with some project responsibilities. All duties must be performed with accuracy, timeliness and extreme attention to detail. The DBA is expected to keep informed of new technology advances that may have a positive/negative effect on base level support and/or development toolkit. REQUIRED SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS: BS in technology field or equivalent education and experience. At least 5 years of database management with relational databases primarily in a Microsoft SQL 2005 and 2008 environment 5+ years of direct responsibilities performing DBA work in a high availability production environment 5+ years of experience troubleshooting performance problems, and performing application releases. 5+ years of experience in SQL tuning, writing T-SQL procedures, and complex queries. Must have experience in an operational or production environment Proven experience with SQL Server software patch administration preferred Proven experience with database security audits preferred Experience with SSRS Experience with SSIS is a plus Knowledge of clustering, mirroring, replication and failover technologies (SQL native and Third-Party) Experience with data management and data process flowcharting Proven experience of process and task automation Knowledge of data warehousing and experience with Business Intelligence tools is beneficial 1|Page Washington Dental Service Job Description Knowledge of ETL tools and processes Must possess exceptional troubleshooting skills. Knowledge of ITIL service management framework and processes will be beneficial. Knowledge of storage area network technology will be beneficial. Must have knowledge of automated monitoring tools & capabilities for SQL server Ability to analyze complex database problems and select corrective action. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents and technical procedures. Ability to write reports and routine business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients and customers. Ability to operate effectively in a cross functional team environment. Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships within DB team, systems team, and applications development. Willingness to make decisions; exhibit sound and accurate judgment; explain reasoning for decisions; include appropriate people in decision-making process; make timely decisions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Responsible for participating in projects and daily activities of the Database Administrators to include training, organizing, and planning. 2. Responsible for typical DBA functions including installing/configuring databases, backup and recovery, troubleshooting production issues, data movement to non-production environments, manage security, and monitoring database growth and capacity planning. 3. Implement new or changed software in the Database layer in association to projects and releases. 4. Partner with Business Analysts and Software developers to plan, design, develop, implement and enhance scripts, triggers, stored procedures and metadata for relational databases. 5. Review, evaluate, design, implement and maintain company databases including multiple Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and 2008 databases. 6. Develop disaster recovery/business continuity environments, reporting and data mining environments, 7. Implement and utilize automated strategies to monitor all aspects of SQL server availability. 2|Page Washington Dental Service Job Description 8. Review, evaluate design and implement data security procedures to comply with audit requirements. 9. Implement performance tuning process using standard SQL server utilities. 10. Provide technical guidance to other Systems Analysts and Applications Programmers during the application development life cycle. 11. Support and perform maintenance and tuning activities on existing database subsystems within the application development environments and documents solutions for delivery to production. 12. Work with Architects, Managers and other DBAs in relation to the planning, design and execution of database administration and development activities using most recent database and software development tools and methodologies. 13. Remediate issues as they arise and ensure that database modifications follow sanctioned methodologies. 14. Monitor database activities and share a 24/7 on-call rotation with other team members SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position will have no direct supervision responsibilities.
