Fisheries. IMR is a national centre of research on the marine environment, renewable marine resources
and aquaculture, and act as advisor to the Government and Fishing industry. IMR purports to be a
leading institute on marine research both nationally and internationally and a creditable provider of
premises and knowledge. On this basis IMR shall contribute to a responsible use of the options offered by
the sea and coastal waters both as a larder and as basis for industry and recreation.
The Department of Aquaculture employs 110 persons located at the headquarter in Bergen, Norway and
our two modern research stations, Austevoll Aquaculture Research Station approximately 60 km south of
Bergen and Matre Aquaculture Research Station located 85 km north of Bergen.
The Institute of Marine Research, Department of aquaculture invites applicants for 1 Senior

deducted from the salary.
Marine biology I
The project ”Regional capacity for organic impact” which aims to study the effects of organic
matter sedimentation from fish farms on the benthic fauna communities in open fjord systems.
The study is part of the Institute of Marine Research’s attempt to develop a general methodology
for localizing fish farms. The candidate will study the connection between sedimentation of
organic matter and the abundance, biomass and species composition of the benthic fauna.
Applicants must have a M.Sc .in marine biology or equivalent qualifications. Prior experience in
faunistics or benthic ecology is desirable.
For further information contact project leader Arne Ervik, tel. +47 55 23 63 55, e-mail:
[email protected] or associate professor Tore Høisæter, tel. +47 55 58 44 75, e-mail:
[email protected]. The application number is “15-02”.
Marine biology II
The candidate will be connected to the project „New marine food resources for aquaculture“, and
will participate in development of new acoustic and optic methods for abundance estimation of
krill and other zooplankton. Included in this is also development of equipment for representative
sampling of macro-zooplankton. The study will focus on investigations of reproduction biology,
2
growth pattern and determination of mortality rates of oceanic krill populations, this as elements
in biological models for krill.
The candidate must have finished M.Sc. in marine biology or comparable.
For further information contact project leader Webjørn Melle (tel. +47 55 23 84 77,
e-mail: [email protected]. The application number is “16-02”
Molecular biologist
The candidate will be working with problems related to migration of escaped farmed salmon into
rivers with wild populations. Baseline data from several rivers, established from analysis of old
scale samples, will be compared to the present genetical structure. Applicants should be familiar
with molecular genetical techniques and also have a good knowledge in statistics.
The candidate must have finished M.Sc. in molecular biology, genetics or comparable.

Molecular biology/microbiology
The aim of the project “Fish farm location” is to generate scientific knowledge that will ensure
location and operation of marine fish farms with minimal negative effects on the environment.
One effect of interest is transmission of pathogens from one farm to another and from farmed fish
to wild fish and vice versa.
The candidate will work as a part of a group, and will study mechanisms for transmission of
pathogens in the marine environment. The techniques will involve detection of pathogens
(bacteria, viruses) in water samples and in marine organisms by molecular biological methods
