Yr 10 Chemistry
The Atom
Starter
 Element Bingo
Objectives
 TO KNOW the terms protons,
electrons and neutrons and some of
their properties
 TO BE ABLE draw the basic structure
of the atom.
 TO UNDERSTAND how these particles
are physically arranged in relation to
each other.
In the Beginning………
 Even in ancient times,
people sought to organize
the world around them into
fundamental elements, such
as earth, air, fire, and water.
The Greek thinker Empedocles first classified
the fundamental elements as fire, air, earth,
and water, although our particular diagram
reflects Aristotle's classification.
Atoms are made of 3 major particles.

Atomic number =
the number of protons in an atom.
Atomic Structure
An atom is made of 3 types of particle.
In the
nucleus
of the
atom
PROTONS
(negatively
Charged)
NEUTRONS
(no charge)
ELECTRONS
(Moving around
outside the nucleus.
Negatively charged)
But…………………..
There is a fourth part to the
atom.
Extension
 Atomic Number and atomic mass on the periodic
table.
