The Most Important Thing—Chapter 12
AP European History—2nd Period
Mr. Cicerchi
There are many important things in Chapter 12, but the most important thing according
to…
Moira is the emergence of humanism, inspiring people of the renaissance to focus on the individual as
opposed to religion and society as a whole.
Christal is the use of ambassadors in the Italian states because it changed both
the thoughts and ways that ambassadors were used in the middle ages and the
use of ambassadors, as they are used in the 16th and 17th centuries, has
carried over to today.
Maria is while the Renaissance is formerly known for the artistic, social, and intellectual rebirth of life
and the arts, I believe that the most important concept during this chapter was the birth of modern
diplomacy and the development of new procedures for statecraft determined by Niccolo Machiavelli;
henceforth providing a basis to stabilize the multitude of independent, power-hungry states and create
a more stable government for the vast majority of corrupt nations, providing stability that could then
provide the means for individuals to seek out artistic actualization, all while producing highly intelligent
concepts of statecraft still consulted far into the future for a best means to successfully rule an empire.
Marissa is the development of humanism in Italy. This philosophy influenced the art and
literature of the time as well as how children were educated and how people perceived the world
around them. Ancient culture became the prominent influence as the Neoplatonism movement
and the works of Michelangelo demonstrate, while individualism and secularism were further
emphasized through the humanities. In addition, the idea of civic humanism arose during the
15th century causing humanists to assume important roles in society and thus further influence
Italian society with humanist ideals. Nearly every aspect of the Italian Renaissance was
somehow influenced by the humanism movement which is why it is the most important part of
this chapter.
Jarod is The development of the printing press with move-able type. This allowed for
the new ideas of the Renaissance to spread around Europe faster. Also, it fueled the
development of research which helped advance Europe much more during this time
period.
Ben is The most important thing that happened during the Renaissance was the development of
the printing press. While the development of humanism and the improvements on education
were important, the printing press allowed even your common man to improve his education.
Jimmy is how The Italian Renaissance marks a new chapter in history with a new social idea
that focuses on the individual's ability and self-worth, a recovering economy as manufacturing
and trade improve, and a new emphasis on art and the artists that help turn Italy into the cultural
center of the world.
Nathan is the Artistic High Renaissance. The three artistic giants and other
artists became equals with the upper classes and were regarded as artistic
geniuses with skills akin to the divine. These artists were the first to
embody the concept of the modern artist. The works of art created during this
time, e.g., the last supper, School of Athens, and the Sistine Chapel Ceiling
are what brought these artists the respect they gained during the renaissance
and still have today since their art is still preserved in museums.
Lindsey is was the development of humanism, as this intellectual movement changed the way
the people of the 15th century viewed history and their present day, affecting philosophy and
education, as well as beginning to move them away from religion.

Brett is
Audrey is the creation of new monarchies. This is because they limited the private armies of the
aristocracy, raised taxes, and created professional armies, this allowed the monarchs to reestablish the
centralized power of monarchical governments and also mire the Popes during the Renaissance.
Michael is how the Italian Renaissance changed Artwork and Literature. The
Renaissance helped evolve English print to the way it is written today. Some of the first
novels written in modern English were during this time period.
Andrew is particularly because of how it would influence the rest of Italian politics later on, were the
wars in Italy between the Valois and Habsburg dynasties through Spain and France, which started the
Italian mindset of being conquered because the Italians couldn't unite then and wouldn't be able to for a
long while.
Nick is The creation of ambassadors working for their state rather than Christendom, this change
is still used today to maintain the peace and to do whatever may best serve the preservation of
their own country/state instead of peace overall for all states. This job was used in Italy like
today to preserve the peace between the states, and to attempt to benefit their own state in any
way possible. If it weren’t for this occupation wars in Italy would’ve broken out far more often
and today’s wars would be even more common than they are already.
Dan is the idea of humanism because the change in ideals would lead to the
changes in art, education, and therefore define the time.
Dan Lemr
James R.
Elizabeth is the emphasis that was placed on art, music, and education and how
they impacted culture during the Italian Renaissance.
Reilly is
Quincy is the Humanist Movement was an important part of the Renaissance period. The
movement impacted education and culture of the 15th century.
Jason is the development of strong, centralized monarchies in France, Spain, and England. This
would lead to the decline of Venice, and the disparate Holy Roman Empire, who would not be
able to compete with the resources these strong kingdoms would now have, thus fully cementing
the irrelevance of the Catholic Church and setting the stage for nationalism.
Football girl? is the Italian intellectuals became intensely interested in the
Greco-Roman culture of the ancient Mediterranean world which lead to
the renaissance being in the Italian cities which eventually spread all
over Europe.

AP European History—6th Period
Mr. Cicerchi
There are many important things in Chapter 12, but the most important thing according
to…
Andjela is humanism. Before, in the Middle Ages, people weren't considered as
important as God, the Church, the King. This can be seen in a lot of medieval art:
human figures aren't drawn realistically and anatomy isn't important. When artists,
intellectuals, and educated people re-discovered the literature, philosophy, and art of
ancient Greece and Rome, they began to think of human beings as more interesting
and important. It gave everyone a new outlook on life, and they focused more on
themselves and human nature rather than religion.
Andjela Jevtic
Dean is The introduction of new industries like printing, mining, and metallurgy. This led to different
opportunities for people to gain wealth. It also made it so people who already had wealth could invest in
more industries. They also increased the trade industry with more materials that other places wanted.
With the introduction of new industries, recovery from the Black Plague and other events from the 14th
century happened easier and created more opportunities.
Miranda is the development of humanism and its effect on history. Humanism had a serious
impact on the writing and interpretation of history because of its chronology and the point
of view taken while writing it. As a result, humanism was an important aspect of the
Renaissance age because it affects how we view its history over time.
"Pies. Para que los quiero si tengo alas para volar" - Frida Kahlo
Callie is The era of “new monarchies,” best seen in England, France, and Spain.
Monarchs in these countries were able to reestablish the centralized power of
monarchical governments.
At the same time, the popes of the Renaissance became increasingly involved
in political concerns that overshadowed spiritual responsibilities (even if
the Isabella and Ferdinand in Spain were crazy bible-thumpers and could
totally cover that by themselves), leading to what would be a great
reformation of the church (coming in Chapter 13).
Libby is During the Renaissance, the most important thing was the movement of
the arts and culture, as items like the humanist movement, the great
development of artists and their viewpoints, and music changed culture for
the future dramatically.

Adam is
Ellen is the artistic Renaissance which not only influenced and produced renound artists like Leonardo
da Vinci , Michelangelo and Donato di Donatello but these artists changed the way that art was looked
at by putting an emphasis on understanding the human body in art and depicting nature and biblical
scenes. This revitalized the classic Greco-Roman style that was influential to the Renaissance as a whole.
Finally when most people think of the Renaissance they think of the art masterpieces created during it.
Sincerely
Ellen DeWitt
Matt is the Italian Renaissance because it was the birthplace of the modern
world. It brought about an urban living style like today, political changes,
and a new enjoyment of “worldly” things in Italy’s city states.
Jeremy is OBVIOUSLY:
The breakout of Humanism, as it led to a more educated society. As people
became more obsessed with reading the classics of the Romans and Greeks, they
believed in humans as much as divine and other supernatural matters, and
could come up with ways to solve problems rationally (not like the
flagellants).
See you tomorrow,
Jeremy Foust
Michael is the spread of humanism. Humanism caused the Catholic Church to have
less control over how history is viewed. Humanists began taking down history
in non-religious views. It also led to more importance in education and
people's literacy.
Megan is In 1527 Charles I of Spain captured Rome in the sack of Rome and
Italy became dominated by the Spainards. Italy would not receive unification
until 1870
Jared is the rise of humanism. Not only did intellectuals of this period give forth their philosophies on
the importance and divinity that lies in human beings through literary works, but they also became
active in society as chancellors, councillors, and advisers. This emergence of intellectuals from their lives
of solitude was known as civic humanism: The idea that a person "grows to maturity -both intellectually
and morally- through participation" as an active member of society. Because of this, people gained a
new perspective on themselves as humans and began to realize their individual potentials.
Mamdouh is the Renaissance period was a new way of looking at the world,
such as human beings are the center of all things, and also the monarchies
of the known world were being affected: in Western Europe centralized
monarchies were being reestablished while in Eastern Europe monarchies
were being controlled by the nobles.
Devin is The development of humanism because it led to people looking toward reason and
science to explain issues rather than looking to supernatural or divine factors to explain their
problems. This helped catalyze a movement toward modern science, art, and literature.
Haleah is
Becky is The Renaissance was a period that, when compared directly with the recent events of
the continent's past, were immensely better and more prosperous than ever. Most of the period
even tried to refer back to its Roman/Grecian times of total prosperity and human development
as inspiration for a new "utopia" they were striving to build.
Essentially this era brought on new theories and additions to old ones, people began exploring
themselves as the value of life came to be more important once again (after the plague). Art was
obviously one of the major areas that benefited from the importance placed on its subjects. Great
minds emerged, placing new thoughts on education, principalities, religion and (naturally) art
onto the world stage.
The Renaissance served as a time for humanity to regroup and examine themselves as a whole
and what they wished to leave as remembrance of their time on this earth.
Sam is the economic recovery and expansion of trade for the Florentine and Hansa trading
groups because it allowed for growth in other industries such as textiles. The overall economic
growth in Italy specifically allowed for a positive outlook and greater exchange of ideas, thus
fueling the renaissance.
