Necessary Angel Theatre Company is dedicated to
fully exploring the theatrical arts by creating original
work that challenges assumptions and engages
multiple points of view, while seeking to provoke
and astonish.

It was founded in 1978 in
Toronto, Canada
It is considered a leading
Canadian theatre
company
It has churned out 50
productionsTheir breakthrough
production was “Tamara”
in 1981.

Necessary Angel continued to do shows into the 90s
drawing upon well known authors such as David
Young and Timothy Findley
It also made adaptations on international shows by
Milan Kundera and British playwright Howard Barker.
In 1996 the company created a New Canadian Play
Development Program. The program led to the
creation of:
Inexpressible Island (1997) by David Young
Beating Heart Cadaver (1998) by Colleen Murphy
It's All True (1999) by Jason Sherman
All three were nominated for the Governor-General's
Award for Drama and the Chalmers Award for
Outstanding New Play
Inexpressible Island went on to London’s West End

In 2003 Daniel Brooks became the
artistic director for the company
In his years there, he has created and
organized several plays, almost all of
which won Dora Awards
The company continues to be in the
foreground of Canadian theatre.

Half Life- Clara and Patrick meet in a home for veterans and their families,
and begin to fall in love-as if rekindling an old flame
Hard Sell- A play about the ultimate commodity- the gene
The Eco Show- How is the ecology of a family affected by the ecology of the
world?
Bigger Than Jesus- A multimedia one man production about the questions of
life and some good ol’ fashioned bible mockery

budget of approximately $1.2 million
for the 2007/08 season

Since the company lack its own stage, they
have performed on Canadian Stage’s Bluma
Appel Theatre, The Tarragon Theatre,
Theatre Passe Muraille, Buddies in Bad
Times Theatre. As well as international
venues.
