Cardio 3rd-5th Grade TEKS 3rd Grade: Describe the long term effects of physical activity on the heart. (3.4A) Distinguish between aerobic and anaerobic activities. (3.4B) 4th Grade: Describe the effects of exercise on heart rate through the use of manual pulse checking or heart rate monitors. (4.4A) 5th Grade: Relate ways that aerobic exercise strengthens and improves the efficiency of the heart and lungs. Your heart beats faster when you exercise. Heart rate is the number of times the heart beats per minute (BPM), and the pulse is the beat of the heart that can be felt in any artery that lies close to the skin. 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 10 One way to determine your heart rate is to manually take your pulse. http://www.onlinehs.net/pe/cr/images/carotid_pulse_NLM.jpg http://www.livehealthyaustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/dixie-pulse.jpg If you apply too little pressure, you may miss some beats. Too much pressure can slow the heart rate. 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 11 Heart rate is measured by counting the number of times your heart beats in one minute. Take a 6 second pulse and then multiply it by 10 to get your heart rate. (6 x 10 = 60 seconds = 1 minute) LET’S TAKE YOUR PULSE… Checking your heart rate while exercising is a way to measure the intensity of your workout, (how hard you are working). Teacher Note: 6 second timer will begin on click. 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 1 2 3 4 5 6 12 10 210 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 13 210 126 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 14 210 179 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 15 126 7/7/2015 179 © Austin Independent School District 16 Target Heart Rate Zone for Exercise Target Heart Rate (THR) zone for elementaryaged students should be between 120-190 bpm (beats per minute). Knowing your target heart rate zone is your guide to reaching fitness goals. Exercising at the right intensity and for the right amount of time is key to improving health. You should try to reach your THR zone for at least 20-30 minutes, 3-5 days per week 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 17 Resting heart rate is the number of times the heart beats in one minute while a person is at complete rest. Do you want a slower or faster resting heart rate? SLOWER! 7/7/2015 Your heart is working better! It’s pumping more blood with each beat. © Austin Independent School District 18 Aerobic bicycling swimming laps jogging dancing 7/7/2015 © Austin Independent School District 19 Anaerobic Less than 5 minutes!
