World History Syllabus
Pottsgrove Middle School, Room 104

Course Description: The purpose of this sixth grade social studies class is to expose
students to the study of the beginning of early civilizations all the way through the
fall of the Roman Empire. Students will study how the geography of a region could
impact civilization. Students will study the social, political and economic
foundations for early civilizations progressing through the Roman Empire. Students
will start the year with analyzing the shift from early nomadic societies to become
agricultural societies. Students will also study the development of civilizations,
including the areas of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Ancient Israel, Greece, and
Rome. The study of these civilizations will include the impact of geography, early
history, cultural development and political and economic change. The course utilizes
the appropriate informational texts and primary sources.
Course Content: Content is determined based on the PA Standards for Social
Studies and Reading grades 6-12 and PA Standards for Writing and Social
Studies grades 6-12.





Introduction to course—what is history? What is archaeology? What are
geographical features? How does geography impact a civilization
The Beginnings of Civilization---Early humans, migration, role of culture
and government
The First Civilizations—Mesopotamia, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Chaldeans
Ancient Egypt—geography and social, political and economic foundations
Ancient India---geography and social, political and economic foundations




Ancient Israel—geography and the social, political and economic
foundations
Ancient China—geography and the social, political and economic
foundations
Ancient Greece—geography and the social, political and economic
foundations
Ancient Rome—geography and the social, political and economic
foundations
Course Materials: Please be prepared with the following materials each day.


Notebook paper

Textbooks will not be sent home. All students will have access to a textbook
in class and textbook will be available on the Ipad. If you would like to sign
out a textbook for the year, you may, please see me. If you would like to sign
a textbook out overnight, you are permitted to do so. Please see me.
