Title: Electrical loading for in situ XRD experiments
Personnel performing this procedure will have training provided by the
equipment manufacturer or by a trained UF personnel.
PURPOSE
To establish methods for applying electric field across samples using SRS PS300
power supply, while conducting in-situ X-ray diffraction experiments.
II.
OUTLINE OF METHOD
The electrical loading setup will be used to apply ac/dc fields across material
samples, while simultaneously obtaining X-ray diffraction profiles.
III. Resources
This is any necessary information or equipment that is needed for applying
electric field across ceramics during in-situ X-ray diffraction experiments. A list
of the PPE that is needed is also listed and should be closely followed. Other
information is listed in the instrument manual.
A. Resources (Prior knowledge and equipment)
1. High Voltage Source
2. PPE
a. Lab coat or proper safety shirt and pants
b. Protective Eyewear is required if High Voltage is on and the door
for the diffractometer housing is open.
IV. PROCEDURE
Following are the steps for conducting in situ high voltage experiment at Inel
CPS120 X-ray diffractometer housing using SRS PS300 power supply
1. Make sure to make a “High Voltage” sign is applied on the handle of the
door for the diffractometer housing.
2. Make sure the ceramic is positioned appropriately as per the calibrated
diffraction geometry.
3. Make sure the power strip is easily accessible.
4. Connect the positive and negative terminals to the electroded surfaces of
the ceramic.
5. Make sure the high voltage on the power supply is turned OFF.
6. Additonally connect the fixture to the ground terminal from the device.
7. Set the voltage limit and current limits (to just above that required for
experiment) using the appropriate buttons on the power supply front panel.

Title: Electrical loading for in situ XRD experiments
8. Make sure the diffractometer goniometer, detector, housing etc is
insulated from the high voltage leads.
9. Make sure all High Voltage wires are insulated and secured (not loose) up
to the sample.
10. Turn on the High Voltage Enable Switch on the power supply.
11. Turn off the high voltage after the experiment is finished and disconnect
the power supply instrument.
B. Emergency Procedure and Shutdown
1. Shut machine down using the power switch or unplugging to shut down all
power going to machine.
C. Safety Hazards
1. Please use proper PPE when handling.
2. Never open the diffractometer housing when the high voltage is on.
3. High Voltage source: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD!!! Please use
proper PPE and use according to Standard Operating Procedures.
4. Never touch HV line when the unit is on.
5. Use one hand when necessary.
