1. Summary of Role:
The media planner / buyers role is responsible for the development of media plans consistent with the
advertising and marketing strategies of the accounts assigned. On approval of these plans the planner / buyer
then negotiates, implements, monitors their execution and conducts post analysis. They are also responsible
for conducting statistical media analysis and day-to-day media administration functions. Responsibility to
achieve best possible results based on media strategy for best price / added value through Media Buyer or own
buying abilities. Strength in building strong Client, Agency and Supplier relationships is required to ensure
competitive advantage.

Analyse and interpret media research
information for media planning purposes
Preparation of media recommendations
based on knowledge of client’s marketing
objectives and strategies
Provide supporting rationale for media
recommendation based on knowledge of
client business / market place / demographic
trends and competitor pressures.
Presentation to client of media strategy as
required

Has a broad knowledge across all types of media

Recommendations accurately respond to brief

Media strategy presented in a clear and easily
understood format with supporting rationale

Utilises media data correctly and efficiently.

Proficient in the use of single source planning
tools; eg: Roy Morgan, Panorama.

Achieve best placement / best price for client

Able to competently manage and implement the
media planning and buying process, including
making schedule adjustments if required.

All media bookings adhere to deadline and
conform to approved media plan.
Buying and Implementation






Negotiates day-to-day media buys, achieving
optimum price and positioning
Ensures orders for all print media are placed
and are consistent with the approved media
plan
Issues appropriate buying requests to
broadcast and sales house groups
Reviews weekly monitoring of television
holdings, adjusting as required to meet
required performance objectives both pre
and during flighted activity.
Reviews print / radio plans on release of new
audience data and adjusts if needed
Prepares media post analysis documentation
to presentation standard.

Communicate any issues or potential
problems to senior person on client business.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of media
market, i.e. demand factors, new
developments, audience research, etc

The agency / media team / client are kept abreast
of market developments & specific issues

Accuracy in all administration e.g. accurate
bookings on the invoicing system, contact reports,
media schedules, etc

Invoices sent to client are accurate & error free

Regularly communicate with agency & client

Proficient in the use of all buying tools e.g.
Pegasus, TV Map, Adquest, DV6, Radios,

Advertising appears in media as approved by the
client.

Demonstrates a mature business approach to
communication both internally and externally.

Develop close client relationships

Develops & interacts with all disciplines within /
outside the agency.
Co-ordination & Admin support

Prepares and issues media despatch details
and deadlines to relevant production and
account service personnel
Checks print media for correct positioning
and reproduction of client advertising
Reviews and evaluates pre-buy and post-buy
broadcast analyses
Researches and prepares ad hoc reports as
requested.
Final checking of media invoicing prior to
billing.
Compilation of competitive reports as
required.
Works with media owners in developing the
necessary information about costs, closing
dates and mechanical requirements.
Prepares and issues media dispatch details
to relevant production personnel.

Organising and prioritising work for self (and Media Buyer if necessary).

Attend client and media owner functions as representatives of DFCB (within, and outside, standard working
hours)
Assist in other areas of the Media operation or Agency business when required
A strong work ethic is required due to the significant size of clients budgets
A real desire to achieve excellent results with energy and enthusiasm for each clients business.
Ability to handle pressure, demands of clients, deadlines and a busy environment.
An attitude to want to produce excellent Media and develop and grow within the role.

4. Qualifications, Skills, Experience
Tertiary educated (ideally) in any of the following disciplines; economics, marketing, advertising, psychology, law,
accounting, statistics
A minimum of two years media planning / buying experience
Strong analytical skills
High numerical reasoning skills
Excellent attention to detail
Excellent negotiator
The ability to present market information and research findings in a concise way that is readily understood
Good verbal and written communication
Software Knowledge
Working knowledge of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Comprehensive working knowledge of Pegasus.
Comprehensive working knowledge of Broadcast Map
Comprehensive working knowledge of AC Nielsen including Peoplemeter, Adquest, Hunter, Microscope
Comprehensive working knowledge of Panorama or Roy Morgan
