Delian League
 An alliance between Athens and other Greek
city-states where they agreed to protect each other.
 Alliance- formal agreement between two or more nations
or powers to cooperate & come to one another’s defense.
 This league was organized by Athens so they could defend
themselves in case Persia decided to attack them.

Athens in the Age of Pericles
 460 B.C.-429 B.C.- “Age of Pericles.”
This was considered a golden age for
Athens. The city was under the
leadership of Pericles at this time.
 Pericles- statesman (former general
in the army) who helped the
economy to thrive and helped the
government to become more
democratic.
Athens in the Age of Pericles
 With the help of an educated foreign-born woman named
Aspasia, Pericles turned Athens into the cultural center of
Greece.
 Pericles & Aspasia surrounded themselves with thinkers,
writers, and artists.
 Through building programs and festivals, they
supported the arts.
 They had a major impact on Athenian culture.
Peloponnesian War
 431 B.C.- Warfare broke out between Athens and
Sparta. Soon, all of Greece became engulfed in the
fighting. This war went on for 27 yrs.

 Cause of conflict- Many Greeks outside of Athens
disliked how powerful Athens had become.
ATHENS
-Had formed Delian League
-Supported democracy among its allies
SPARTA
-Formed the Peloponnesian League
in reaction to the success of Athens
-Encouraged oligarchy
Peloponnesian War
 When Sparta invaded Athens, Pericles allowed people from
the surrounding countryside to move inside the city walls.
 Overcrowded conditions soon led to disaster.
 A terrible plague broke out, killing at least 1/3 of
the population.
 The city’s democratic government began to have problems.
War Continues….
 Sparta eventually allies itself with Persia, the longtime
enemy of the Greeks.
 404 B.C.- With the help of the Persian navy, the Spartans
captured Athens.
 The Spartans took the Athenian fleet and their empire.
 Result: Peloponnesian War ended Athenian domination of
the Greek world.
