CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The Heart
• AORTA – main artery
• VENA CAVA – main vein of the body
• PULMONARY VEIN – brings oxygenated blood from the
lungs
• PULMONARY ARTERY – takes deoxygenated blood
from the heart to the lungs
• SEMILUNAR VALVES – prevents blood from flowing
back into heart from arteries
• SEPTUM - partition that separates the right and left
sides of the heart.
• VENTRICLE - One of the two lower chambers of the
heart.
• ATRIUM - One of the two upper chambers of the
heart.
• ATRIOVENTICULAR VALVE - either of two heart valves
through which blood flows from the atria to the
ventricles; prevents return of blood to the atrium
What are the following?
• Heart rate?
• Stroke Volume?
• Cardiac Output?
• Heart Rate – the number of times the heart beats
a minute
• Stroke Volume – The amount of blood pumped by
the heart in one beat
• Cardiac Output – The amount of blood pumped
by the heart in one minute
CARDIAC OUTPUT
=
STROKE VOLUME X HEART RATE
Resting Pulse rate and Maximum Pulse Rate
• 72 is the average resting pulse rate
• Maximum pulse rate is calculated by
subtracting your age from 220
• The Heart rate can be affected by exercise.
• What else affect heart rate?

The Circulatory system and exercise
• Cardiovascular fitness is the ability to exercise
the body for long periods of time. It requires a
strong heart and clear blood vessels to supply
the muscles with oxygen.
• Select 4 activities that are cardiovascular and
explain why this fitness is needed.
