Athens, a city named after the goddess, Athena, had its temple on the highest point in the city. This was called the Acropolis. Vase paintings or amphora illustrated every day Greek life. From the vases, we learn their stories about their gods and other mythological characters. Ancient Greeks invented the art of drama. The theaters were usually outdoor arenas and called amphitheaters. Athens was also the birthplace of democracy. It had a form of government called demokratia— direct rule by the people. The Greeks didn’t have mechanical clocks, but they had a water clock called clepsydra to measure short amounts of time. The Trojan war was a conflict between Greece and the people of Troy. The people of Greece built a large wooden horse, filled it with Greek soldiers and put it outside the city of Troy.
