LESSON PLAN USING PICJUICE
Title/Topic: Circulatory System (Blood Circulation)
Resources/ Materials: - Textbook, Internet
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to;

state the roles of the heart in the blood circulation.

define the terms systemic and pulmonary circulations .

differentiate the types of vessels.

explain the characteristics of vessels and

explain the roles of vessels in the blood circulation.

use Picjuice program to make their cartoons in the format that they need.
Procedure:
Start
1) Greeting the students
2) Recalling what they have learned previous lesson.
We have learned the definiton of the blood, its roles in the body, the heart and its structure in
previous lesson.
3) Giving information what they will learn today’s lesson.
Today we will find out the roles of the heart in the blood circulation, systemic and pulmonary
circulations, types of vessels and their rolesin the body.
Body:
4) Give them the definiton of the key concepts
Systemic circulation:” It is the portion of the cardiovascular system which carries oxygenated blood
away from the heart, to the body, and returns deoxygenated blood back to the heart. The term is
contrasted with pulmonary circulation.”
Pulmonary circulation: “The pulmonary circulatory circuit describes the process whereby oxygen and
carbon dioxide are delivered to and from the lungs. Oxygen-poor blood travels to the right atrium via
the inferior and superior vena cavae, then to the right ventricle. The right ventricle subsequently
pumps the blood into the pulmonary artery, which branches to the right and left lungs. The
pulmonary arteries subdivide until reaching the arteriole, then capillary levels. After gas exchange,
the capillaries recombine to form venules and veins. Ultimately two right and two left pulmonary
veins carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart for distribution, via the aorta/systemic circuit, to the rest
of the body.”

6) Continue giving the definiton of some terms veins, arteries, capillaries
Veins: Veins are responsible for returning blood to the heart after the blood and the body cells
exchange gases, nutrients, and wastes.
Arteries: “They are strong, elastic vessels adapted for carrying blood away from the heart at
relatively high pumping pressure.”
Capillaries: Capillaries are the points of exchange between the blood and surrounding tissues.
Final:
7) Summarize what they have learned.
8) Separate the class into the 4 groups. Make sure whether groups are heterogenious or not
(number of girls and boys must be equal). Then show the picture which is about headstand
(picture is attached). There will 4 different opinion about it. Let the groups discuss among
themselves about what is the right answer. Then, get the answers from the groups. After that
give the right answer to them.
“How does blood usually reach the head? Since the head is above the
heart it is obvious that the heart must be able to pump blood against
gravity, suggesting that the feet will continue to get blood during a
headstand.
However, the distance that the blood needs to be pumped will be
greater during a headstand. The heart will need to work harder to
pump the blood this extra distance.
Similarly the blood may not return from the head as readily as it
usually does.There are visible signs of any changes in the pattern
of blood circulation. If blood leaves the feet more quickly than
usual, they will go pale. If blood does not leave the head as
quickly as usual, then the face will go red. If the heart has to work
harder, then the pulse rate should increase. Each of these can be
tested with a healthy volunteer.”
9) Ask there is a question about the topic.
Evaluation: :Students are evaluated by giving homework.
HW: Draw a concept map which includes all the terms that we learned in the lesson
