Student Name:__________________________ Keep this sheet to as a cover sheet for your assignment packet. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: An overview This chapter deals with the system that transports blood to and from cells—the cardiovascular system. The heart is the pumping mechanism of the circulatory system. It is a hollow organ about the size of a fist and is composed of cardiac muscle tissue. A thin, tough membrane, called the pericardium, surrounds the heart. The average heartbeat is about 72 times per minute. OBJECTIVES After you have studied this chapter, you should be able to: Name the organs of the cardiovascular system, and discuss their functions. Identify and locate the major parts of the heart and discuss the functions of each part. Trace the pathway of the blood through the heart and the vessels of the coronary circulation. Discuss the cardiac cycle, and explain how it is controlled. Identify the parts of a normal ECG pattern, and discuss the significance of this pattern. Compare the structures and functions of the major types of blood vessels. Describe how substances are exchanged between blood in capillaries and the tissue fluid surrounding body cells. Describe the mechanisms that aid in returning venous blood to the heart. Explain how blood pressure is produced and controlled. Compare the pulmonary and systemic circuits of the cardiovascular system. Identify and locate the major arteries and veins of the pulmonary and systemic circuits.
