Trainee Genetic Counsellor AFC Band 6 2 years fixed term Salary Scale £26,565-35,577 Hours: 37.5 per week We are looking for a caring and enthusiastic individual to join our established Genetics Team as a Trainee Genetic Counsellor. We welcome applications both from individuals with an MSc in Genetic Counselling and from nurses or midwives who would be interested in becoming a genetic counsellor. The training post offers the opportunity for applicants from varied backgrounds to obtain the training and experience required to become a genetic counsellor and to register with the Genetic Counsellor Registration Board (GCRB). During the 24 months of the training post the postholder will gain the requisite clinical and educational opportunities to practice autonomously and to obtain registration as a genetic counsellor. The post will incorporate a range of clinical experience including cancer and general genetic conditions and in specialist genetics and genomics clinics. Formal education in genetics and counselling may be required if not already undertaken and can be supported within the post. The successful candidate will be based at Birmingham Women’s Hospital and may be required to attend clinics throughout the West Midlands region. The West Midlands Regional Genetic Service provides clinical and laboratory genetics services for the whole of the West Midlands Region (population 5.3 million). The department has strong partnerships with NHS Trusts and clinical specialties across the region and has established an excellent reputation for GC training. Candidates will be expected to have EITHER a professional qualification as a nurse or midwife and a relevant first or masters degree with significant clinical experience OR have completed the taught part of an MSc in Genetic Counselling and, ideally, have submitted their dissertation.
