Smart Primary Injection High Current Testing Product Line EPRI CBUD Users Group Meeting June 17 2010 1 1 Why get Smart? Megger has had Primary Current Injection with: – DDA Series –CB Series –MS Series –ODEN Series So, why Smart Primary Injection…. • Use new technology to enhance the usability • Lower the weight per watt output ratio • How about 2,000 Amp in a 44 pound box? 2 Smart Primary Injection – Target Applications Commissioning Testing Maintenance Testing Low Voltage Circuit Breaker Testing • Pickup Testing • Time Curve Testing • Instantaneous Trip Testing High Current Primary Injection Switchgear Testing • Heat Run Test • CT Test Ground Grid Testing • Test and diagnose corroded ground grids Recloser Testing – Oil & Vacuum • • • • Minimum Pickup Test Trip and Reclose Timing Test Single Shot to Lockout Test Sectionalizer Test 3 Smart Primary Injection – Goals Improve high current testing repeatability Reduce high current testing time Provide a means to compare manufacturer trip curves to actual test results Provide ability to database test results Simplify high current testing by automating process Provide report generation 4 Smart Primary Injection High Current Line Smart Primary Injection – SPI - Key Features Feature Benefit SPI can be controlled by STVI or PC Permits users the option to control the system manually from a “Smart Touch View Interface” or use a PC to automatically control the unit. PowerDB is controlling software •This simplifies training for both STVI users and PC users since the system uses the same application •PowerDB benefits are immediately available, such as test report generation, database management, trending etc. Programmable output current •Speeds testing by eliminating the manual variac. •Every other high current system requires user to manually set output current. SPI system compares test results against manufacture’s time current curves •Eliminates the need for the user to manually compare trip times to a paper TCC curve 5 Smart Primary Injection High Current Line Smart Primary Injection – SPI - Key Features Feature Benefit Automatically regulates output current to programmed value •Overcomes heating of the trip element which causes the current to drop during a thermal test •Maintains a uniform current waveform even with changing load impedances Multiple compact portable systems can be linked together to generate higher test current •Higher test currents can be obtained by adding multiple units (stacking). •Synchronization between multiple boxes is obtained by a single Ethernet cable PC connects using Ethernet or USB cables Wired communication & control is achieved by common high speed communication cables. Bluetooth enabled PC’s eliminate communication wires Eliminates the users need for a communication cable. 6 Smart Touch View Interface Operation Simple intuitive interface specifically designed for: • Primary injection testing • Circuit breaker testing • Ratio CT’s Permits storage of test results in STVI Rugged and simple touch screen interface STVI Uses PowerDB as operating application Test results compared against manufacture’s trip curves • The STVI will ship with available breaker curves • Additional breaker curves can be added by downloading from PowerDB 7 STVI Operation of SPI Results can be transferred with USB stick or Ethernet connection STVI connects to SPI using a common Ethernet patch cable Same STVI can be used on ANY SPI unit 8 SPI – Smart Primary Injection SPI-835 • Provides advanced testing features for existing CB-832 customers • Able to test 225A circuit breakers • 2000A maximum output • Weight 20kg (44 lbs) • Comply to Circuit Breaker Testing Standards –NEMA AB-4 –NMAC Breaker Maintenance Vol.3 –NETA Testing Guidelines • CE and IEC61010 compliance 9 Future SPI Systems • 1600A Breaker Test System –19,000A Max • 2000A Breaker Test System –20,000A Max • 3000A Breaker Test System –35,000A Max • 6000A Breaker Test System –60,000A Max 10 Customers Visited During Market Investigation Nuclear Power Plants • • • Desired Automated Current Control Some requested PC Control Portability Fossil Power Plants • • • • Desired report generation Manual and PC Control Automatic current control Comparison against manufacture’s curves Service Companies • • • • • Desired report generation Manual and PC control Automatic current control Comparison against manufactures curves Portability Industrials • • • • • Manual Control Desired report generation Automatic current control Comparison against manufacture’s curves Portability 11
