6th Course Basic and Translational Endocrinology:
“Emerging Technologies in Endocrine Research”
Also as a precursor for the JNCE conference 27 & 28 October in Leiden
Monday 24-Wednesday 26 October, 2016
web version 160623
(NB most speakers still to be invited!)
Organizers:
Erica van den Akker, Leo Hofland, Joop Janssen, Robin Peeters, Jenny
Visser, Frank van Vliet
Participants: Research Master students, Postgraduates, Post docs and other
interested participants of the Postgraduate Schools MolMed and MGC
and from other Universities
The Erasmus Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine has two main activities: the
organization of education for postgraduate students, and the stimulation of
cooperation between several departments with regards to translational research.
The aim of this course and workshop is to offer a comprehensive, interactive
introduction to the field of basic and translational Endocrinology, including the
paediatric aspects. The course aims at a small and specialised audience of PhD
students working in this field, who like to gain in-depth knowledge.
We cooperate with the JNVE conference on the 2 following days, 27 & 28
October in Leiden. This JNVE conference will again take place at the Holiday Inn Hotel
in Leiden at October 27 and 28. The conference will offer a varied programme with a
workshop on the history of hormone preparations (dr. Toine Pieters, VUMC/UMCU) and
furthermore several talks by renowned Dutch senior researchers that do research on
obesity in children (dr. Erica van den Akker, EMC), FGF-23 and Klotho (dr. Marc Vervloet,
VUMC), thyroid carcinoma (dr. Thera Links, UMCG) and HPA axis in young delinquents
(dr. Lucres Nauta, VUMC). Furthermore, this year's foreign guest speaker is drs.
Christoph Thaiss (Weizmann Institute of Science, Tel Aviv, Israel), with his talk
'Microbiome time'. See: http://www.nve.nl/jnve-conference-2016.
This course at Erasmus MC is primarily organized for PhD students and
postdocs of the Postgraduate Schools MolMed and MGC. Other participants, such as
Research Master students, young MD’s and research technicians, as well as other
researchers in this field are welcome on ‘first come first served’ basis. The total number
of participants is limited to 25.
All 6 themes that we cover will start with an overview given by the moderator in a Q&A
form by the participants themselves, as a ‘refreshments class’. The morning and
afternoon sessions of the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are each dedicated to one of
the 6 specific themes of this course & workshop.

We expect that the participants study previously some chapters from the
recommended textbook of this course:
