Goal: To understand transport through a membrane. • Sit down facing the screen • Take out Guided Notes • Take out pen or pencil • Examples: Diffusion & Facilitative Diffusion • Movement of substances from an area of higher concentrations to an area of lesser concentrations. NO ENERGY is needed!!! Created by S. DaSilva Created by S. DaSilva • Example: Osmosis • Movement of water from an area of high concentrations to an area of lesser concentrations. NO ENERGY! Created by S. DaSilva – Movement of substances from an area of lesser concentrations to an area of greater concentrations. – Requires ENERGY! • Exocytosis Process in which the cell expels large particles (waste matter) out of the cell. Exo = exit • Endocytosis Process in which the cell engulfs large particles (food) into the cell. Homeostasis The cell membrane, using passive and active transport, determines what gets into or out of the cell. The selective flow of material helps the cell to maintain constant internal conditions: called Homeostasis. Solution • a solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two parts. • a common example is a solid, such as salt or sugar, dissolved in water. • Solventthe part that does the dissolving, usually larger. • solutethe part that dissolves, usually smaller. Cells in 3 Types of Solutions 1. Isotonic(equal) 2. Hypotonic(less) 3. Hypertonic(more) • When talking about types of solution, always think about the solution outside the cell. • Ask the question does the solution have an equal, more or less solute outside the cell than inside. • Iso-Hypo-Hyper????? • Then figure out if the there is more or less water outside the cell than inside. • Osmosis - water moves from greater to lesser Isotonic 1. Isotonic literally translates to equal tension. 2. Solute concentration of solution outside the cell is equal to that inside the cell. Iso-Hypo-Hyper????? 3. Water concentration is equal inside & outside the cell 4. No net water movement Hypertonic Solution 1. Solute concentration of 40% salt solution is higher outside 60% water the cell than inside. 2. Hyper = more (think hyperactive). 3. Less water outside the cell than inside. 4. Water moves out of cell into solution・ Cell shrinks 10% salt water 90%90% water Hypotonic 1. Hypo = less Think HIPPO = cell gets large 2. Solute concentration of solution is lower than the solute inside the cell. 3. More water outside the cell. 4. Water moves into cell from solution. 5. Cell expands (and may burst) 10% salt 90% water 40% salt 60% water Below: All cells are composed of 50% NaCl & 50%Water 30 __%NaCL 70 __%Water 50 __%NaCl 50 __%Water ___% 70 NaCl 30 ___%Water Hypo or Iso,Iso, Hypo orHypertonic Hypertonic 1. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? LESS HYPO 2. The solution is ________tonic 3. Is there more/less water outside the cell than inside? MORE 4. Will the water move in or out of the cell? IN 10% water 90% water Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 5. Is there more/less/equal solute outside the cell than inside? EQUAL ISO tonic. 6. The solution is _____ 7. Is there more/less/same water outside the cell than inside? SAME 8. Will the water move in, out or both of the cell? BOTH BACK & FORTH Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 9. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? MORE HYPER tonic. 10. The solution is _____ 11. Is there more/less water outside the cell than inside? LESS 12. Will the water move in or out of the cell? OUT 10% SALT 90% water 60% SALT 40% water Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 13. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? MORE HYPER tonic 14. The solution is _____ 20% salt 80 __% water 15. Is there more/less water, outside the cell than inside? LESS 16. Will the water move in or out of the cell? OUT 50% salt ___% 50 water Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic 17. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? LESS HYPO tonic 18. The solution is _____ 19. Is there more or less water, outside the cell? MORE 20. Will the water move in or out of the cell? IN 90% NaCl 10% water 10% NaCl 90% water Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic *The produce are misted with a 100% water solution. *Produce consists of 10% salt and 90% water. 21. Is there more/less solute outside the produce than inside? LESS HYPO tonic. 22. The solution is _____ 23. Is there more/less water outside the produce than inside? MORE 24. Will the water move in or out of the produce? IN Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic The Angelfish is in 30% salt water solution. The Angelfish is 10% Salt. There is less water outside the fish than inside. 25. The solution is HYPER ___________tonic 26. Will the water move in or out of the Angelfish? OUT 10% NaCl 90% Water 30% NaCl 70% Water Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic Some foods that we eat are nonsoluble(non dissolvable) These foods stay in our large intestine. 21. Is there more/less solute outside the intestinal cells than inside? more 22. The solution is hyper _____ tonic. 23. Is there more/less water outside the intestinal cells than inside? less 24. Will the water move in or out of the intestinal cell? out The End!!!! Congratulations
