Young Life Iowa City – Camp Scholarship, “Campership”, Policy
Young Life Iowa City intends to make summer camp trips as accessible as possible for students to
attend. However, we understand that the financial commitment to a summer camp trip is simply not an
option for some families. We hope that the following policy ensures that every student who wants to go to
camp has the opportunity to do so and that the cost of camp would not preclude any student from doing
so.
Important Note: The availability of campership funds depends entirely on the amount of donations
received. Consequently, the following policy does not guarantee any particular dollar amount in
campership to any student.
Our Campership policy is as follows:
Eligibility:
For a student to be eligible for campership funds, a parent must contact the Young Life office directly by
mail, email, or phone call and indicate that their child will be participating in the campership opportunities.
A Young Life staff member will officially register the student.
All students are eligible to earn up to half the cost of the camp trip in campership. If a student needs to
cover more than half the cost of the trip in campership, a written statement explaining the student’s need
is required.
Opportunities:
1. Young Life will provide four large-group project days during the spring semester (typically outdoor
landscape or clean up work). All campers must participate in at least one of the projects
(preferably the Kasper’s Landscape and Design Mulching Day).
Students who are officially registered to receive campership funds will earn at least $12/hour
(depending on the total amount raised) at these group projects; all students are invited to participate
in any or all of the large-group projects but s/he must be registered to receive campership funds.
2. Young Life will arrange a variety of small projects for individuals requesting more opportunities to
earn campership funds. These projects will be set up over the phone with individual student. Students
participating in these projects will earn $12/hour.
3. Young Life will provide a flyer students can use in arranging “odd jobs” with friends, family, and
neighbors. Please only contact people you know. Individuals hiring students should make a check out
to Young Life with the student’s name in the memo.
Other Ideas:
Young Life encourages students to consider different ways they can cover the cost of camp. Some of the
options include:
1. Dedicate a percentage of your paycheck to camp and make a payment to Young Life on your
balance every two weeks or month when you get paid.
2. Ask your parents if there are any projects or small jobs you could do around the house in return
for assistance in paying for camp.
