Complement: is a word or group of words that completes the
meaning of the predicate (verb) of a sentence
o Direct object
o Indirect object
o Objective complement
o Predicate nominative
o Predicate adjective
*Direct Objects and Indirect Objects only occur with action
verbs!*
Direct Objects: completes the meaning of an action verb by telling
“who” or “what”

Ex) I visited the Air and Space Museum.

Ex) Mud and leaves clogged the gutters.

Ex) Which rocket did they launch?
Indirect Objects: is a noun or pronoun that appears with a direct
object and names the person/thing that something is given to or
done for. Ask “to whom?” or “for whom?” or “to what?” or “for
what?”

Ex) NASA gave the astronauts a course correction.

Ex) The teacher taught our class astrophysics.
Ex) We made the couch a slipcover.
Important Note: If you see words like: to, for, in, etc…these are
NOT NOT direct objects or indirect objects!!!
