Warm-up
Compare and contrast the advent of specialized
labor in Europe during the Middle Ages with any
other culture we have studied.
Warm-Up Answer
Europe went through a chaotic period after the collapse of the
Roman Empire. However, the early medieval period resulted in
economic and social change caused by improved farming
technologies. The plow, water mills, horseshoes, and the horse
collar all allowed for faster cultivation of land and a surplus of
goods. Similar to Europe, Persia’s qanats helped bring fresh water
to crops causing a surplus of goods. Europe and Persia developed
specialization of labor similarly through an increase in food
causing a population increase. As population increased so did long
distance trade and a need for merchants, maritime traders, and
missionaries. However, in Persia a high demand for a large
bureaucracy at the top of society was needed to act as tax
collectors and record keepers. Free classes and slaves formed the
bulk of Persian society limiting specialized labor tasks. Whereas in
Europe there was no centralized authority and most power was
given to heads of the church. Specialized labor tasks were given to
three classes of people- those who prayed, those who fought, and
those who labored.

your Reading questions for Chapter 20. Fill in
the details from your partners that you did not
capture yourself (contrasting pen color)
2. You may find inconsistencies as you compare.
If you do, place a star next to the item and raise
it at the end during the whole class debriefing.
3. Now conduct your first meeting. When time is
up students should mark their notes where they
stopped.
THE STEPS
4. Take a processing break: “How did this first round go?
How many of you were able to add something to your notes? Did
anyone find any inconsistency? Did you star it for discussion
later?”
5. From now on, the sound of the bell will mean Stop,
Stand, Rotate, & Begin.
6. Ring Bell. Students should move to the next chair.
They should begin immediately with their new partner
from the place they stopped previously.
7. Debriefing: “What did you realize about your note-taking?
Did you notice any strategies your partner used that could help
you? How did the process enhance your understanding of the
content?”
