Sociology Gender Studies Stream available under Sociology ABOUT SOCIOLOGY Location: Caulfield and Clayton Available as: Major, Minor or as elective units From our students "Sociology has opened up a new field of insight to which I was not previously exposed. It involves looking at people and studying how different aspects of life are viewed or change within different cultures. I have been able to study a range of issues, such as health, gender, sexuality, education and youth. In each of these fields, we have looked at different models and theories underpinning them, as well as their relevance in society and how this can affect individuals and groups." Kelly Anderson Current Student Sociologists investigate the key social and global issues of our time. We focus on diverse communities, cultures, and processes of change. We examine class, gender, ethnicity, power and culture to understand how societies work and how social problems can be solved. Our units are designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore broad theoretical and methodological issues. Why choose Sociology? »» Cultural diversity and identity Sociology is a versatile major. It provides core skills if you are working towards a career in social policy, social research or journalism. Upon completion you will be able to analyse and compare social processes and hold a deep understanding of social change and policy. You will also be able to critically assess major sociological perspectives and apply them to pressing issues in today’s society. As Monash Sociology is one of the largest and highly ranked sociology programs in Australia, you will be taught by leaders in the discipline. »» Sexuality and society How to study Sociology Within Sociology you have a choice: you can complete a general major in Sociology, complete a minor or choose sociology units as electives within your degree.
