Is students’ work interdependent?
YES:
NO:
Group members each research a different internal system
(e.g. circulation, digestion, etc.) of frogs. Students then
work together to dissect a frog and write a lab report
about the dissection, identifying frog parts and the systems
to which they belong. Students rely on each other's work in
order to successfully identify what they see during the
dissection.
Group members work together to research frogs, but each
student conducts their own dissection and writes their own lab
report. Students work together on the research component, but
the products do not require input or participation from others.
Students each use their own networked device to
contribute coordinate points that must collectively create
the shape of a star. Each student’s contribution is necessary so
the group can create the completed shape.
One student uses a device to plot coordinate points and create
a star shape, with input from group members. Only one student
is plotting coordinates; the others may contribute, but they could
also disengage without preventing the group from completing the
product.
Students create a tourist website presenting the history,
culture, attractions, and accommodations of their local
area. Each individual might create a different piece of the
overall website, but students need to work together to
determine how to organize the information to create the best
possible website.
Students each create a webpage about the history, culture,
attractions, or accommodations of their local area that will be
linked to the class homepage. Students do not have to strategize
together in any particular way.
Students use OneNote to create a diagram showing the
food chain in a vernal pond ecosystem. Each student
controls a particular species and students must work
together to place each species in its appropriate niche in
the food chain. Students must work with each other to
complete a comprehensive and accurate representation of the
food chain.
Students use OneNote to identify which species in the vernal
pond ecosystem are carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores, by
placing each species in the appropriate list. Any student can use
their mouse to move any species to any list; students do not need
to work together in any specific way.

What Is the Right Amount of Group Work in
School?
By Shannon Doyne January 17, 2012 (NY Times)

Group work — love it or hate it, it’s a regular part of the
school or work day for many of us. Do you enjoy
collaborating with your classmates on projects? Do
you learn better as part of a group or by working
independently? Do you prefer one style or the other?
Why?
Josh G
I personly hate working in groups. I hate working in
groups because theres always that one person that
distracts the group when they are trying to work. Also,
some people expect the one or two smart people to do
all the work for them. I do not mind working with a
partner, but I would want to pick said partner because I
would want someone to work well with. This is why I
hate partner groups.

I have never been a fan of group work, and I believe that one of
the main reasons for this is that I care about my grades. I have
never been a fan of having other people in charge of my
grades/scoring. I think, however, that group discussions are a very
constructive and helpful in some situations. Group work is
beneficial for non-scoring assignments. I always find myself doing a
majority of the assignment, if not the whole assignment, by
myself. Also, I find that sometimes keeping group members on
track can be time consuming and take away from the task at hand.

You are the leader of a virtual team that includes members who are in New York, Los Angeles, Honolulu,
London, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo. You need to coordinate ways to have live meetings (virtual) and share
documents. You would like to choose a day and time for a weekly conference call to keep the project on
track. Choose a regular days) and time(s) for your meeting schedule.
In your proposed solution, include the following:
Explain your choices, Use the terms synchronous and asynchronous correctly and identify the specific
time zone and meeting time for each meeting participant.
How you will share information with those who cannot make the regular live meeting?
How will you keep the entire team up to date?
What is the responsibility of a team member who is scheduled to give a progress report, but cannot make
a meeting.?
What problems might arise with communications and keeping this geographically dispersed team up to
date at any time?
As project manager of this group, what are some of your specific responsibilities
Hints to Students
These websites (and there are others) provide a way for you to view
multiple locations and time zones

If you are not familiar with synchronous web conferencing, look up the
terms and check out YouTube for "how to" videos.
