Expression Unit: A-SSE.1a Identifying parts of an expression. Expression Vocabulary • Expression- An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide). • Term- Mathematical expressions that contain constant (number) and variables (letters). A number that is by itself is called constant and a number that is attached to a variable is called a coefficient. Terms are separated by addition or subtraction. Terms are joined together by multiplication. A polynomial term cannot have a square root of a variable, no fractional exponents, and no variables in the denominator of any fraction. • Variables- A letter that represents a value or unknown. • Coefficient- a number that is attached to a variable by multiplication. (number in front of the variable) • Like Terms- have the same variable(s) and the same degree (exponent) for each variable. • Factors- one of two or more numbers and/or variables, that when multiplied together produce a given product.
