Henry Purcell lived during the Baroque Era between 10 September 1659 – 21 November 1695. He is one of the most famous English composers. His music contains influences from both Italian and French backgrounds but has a predominantly English style. Purcell is thought to have started composing from the age of nine however the dates of many of his works are unknown. His father died in 1664 which put him in his Uncle’s care who was said to have taken good care of him. Purcell sang in a choir until his voice broke in 1673, when he became assistant to the organbuilder in the Chapel. In 1682, he was appointed organist of the Chapel Royal which is where many of his famous works were written such as I was glad and my heart is inditing and Come Ye Sons of Art. In the final six years of his life, he wrote music for 42 plays. He died aged just 36 and the cause of death is unclear however it is largely speculated that he had Tuberculosis. Woodwind instruments are a family of musical instruments that consist of Flutes and reed instruments. Woodwind instruments can be Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. They are an important sections in both Orchestras and Bands. The Flute is the most common woodwind instrument The Oboe is a doublereeded instrument with a unique sound. The Clarinet is a single-reeded instrument that is transposed differently to the Flute and Oboe. The Saxophone is a singlereeded instrument that is also transposed differently.
