Functions of the Respiratory system: • To take in oxygen when you inhale • To excrete Carbon dioxide when you exhale • To exchange oxygen and CO2 with the red blood cells in the circulatory system 1 Organs and their functions: Nose: collects air from the environment and moistens and heats the air before it enters the trachea; hairs and mucus in the nasal cavity trap dust and other materials 2 Air then goes through the pharynx and larynx (this is where your vocal cords are located) into the Trachea Trachea: (windpipe); moves air from the nose to the lungs; it is lined with mucus and cilia to trap dust, bacteria, and pollen 3 Bronchi: tube that leads from the trachea to the lungs; As it enters the lungs it becomes smaller and smaller and the smallest ones are called bronchioles 4 Lungs: main organ where gas is exchanged between the air and the blood Alveoli: tiny grape-like clusters at the end of bronchiole; where gas exchange occurs; takes place between the alveoli and the capillaries in the circulatory system 5 Diaphragm: a dome-shaped muscle that contracts and relaxes to help move gases into and out of your lungs 6 Diseases: with your group read about the disease you were given that affects the Respiratory system and create a mini-poster that discusses causes, symptoms, affects, what organs it affect, and other important information. 7 cold infectious; caused by a virus; attacks mucous membranes of the nose and throat causing runny nose, sore throat, fever, and stuffiness in the head flu (influenza) infectious; caused by a virus; fever, muscle aches, severe coughs and other cold like symptoms that are more severe strep throat infectious; caused by bacteria, fever, pain and swelling of the throat and tonsils Asthma noninfectious; causes wheezing and trouble breathing when airways shrink in size; triggers are dust, pollen, mold, exercise 8 respiratory system lungs, diaphragm, trachea, alveoli smooth muscle tissue; epithelial tissue smooth muscle cells; epithelial cells 9 How does it work with: Circulatory System: The respiratory system gives this system oxygen to carry to the cells and takes CO2 out of this system to be released as waste. Excretory System: The respiratory system helps this system by release CO2 gas when you exhale. 10
