Patients seen include, TED, Blow out fracture, IIIrd Nerve, IVth Nerve and VIth Nerve Palsies, Esotropia, Exotropia, Hypertropia, Hypotropia, Acommodative and Convergence anomalies, Refractive/Strabismic Amblyopia, Nystagmus, Supra Nuclear and Intra Nuclear Palsies and Duanes/Brown’s Syndrome. To improve clinical skills and knowledge in all aspects of orthoptics and vision science. To be able to accurately record case history, test appropriately, diagnose and manage/treat where necessary. To observe and improve knowledge in Refraction/Low Visual Aids, observe in Consultant Ophthalmology clinics and Theatre, and to feel competent in using all orthoptic testing equipment, whilst under the supervision of qualified orthoptists. Special Knowledge and information which would be useful to the student Recommended reading before placement It would be beneficial to the student if a visit to the Orthoptic Department has been arranged prior to commencing the degree course. Additional skills obtained may include communication, confidentiality, empathy, time management and problem solving, according to departmental and Trust policies. Learning Opportunities Available: To be able to put into practice academic knowledge learnt at university, what tests to do and why, to achieve the ability to become competent in the use of all orthoptic testing equipment, and to gain an insight into the hospital setting, professionalism and how to communicate with patients and other hospital staff. The student will also have the opportunity to observe in theatre squint/cataract operations, refractions, low visual aids, SPLD patients, visual fields and specialised consultant ophthalmologist clinics, as well as participating in secondary screening community clinics. Continued Educational Support: Students: Departmental library, eye clinic library and main hospital library with internet access for Medline, Pubmed and other medical websites. Study time will be allocated within the placement timetable. Patients: Information leaflets on diagnosed conditions and various treatment options and how to administer different treatments including the instillation of drops. Shift times: 9am – 5pm approximately, Monday to Friday.
