Inverurie cancer clinic sees first patient The first patient has attended the Nurse Led Cancer Clinic in Inverurie. Nurse led community cancer clinics have been established in North Aberdeenshire, in Turriff and Fraserburgh hospitals, and now this service has been extended across Aberdeenshire, with new clinics running from Inverurie Hospital and Glen O'Dee in Banchory. The nurse-led cancer clinics cater for follow-up prostate cancer and colorectal cancer patients. Each patient is assessed by a consultant on whether they are suitable for follow-up in the community clinics. Patients have the choice to remain in Aberdeen-based consultant follow up clinics, but are encouraged to attend their local clinic. Karen Smith, Nursing Development Manager for Central Aberdeenshire LCHP, based in Inverurie, said all nursing staff running these clinics have completed a rigorous training programme, in partnership with consultant and nurse specialists in Aberdeen: " We are lucky in Grampian to not only have staff in Aberdeenshire willing to take on these roles, but also good co-operation between colleagues in the hospital and community." Bowel cancer patient Peter Glover (58) from Inverurie is a construction commissioning engineer. He was the new clinic’s first patient and is impressed with the service and obvious location advantages. "It makes life so much easier to have my follow up appointments here – I can walk to the clinic, avoid driving to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and parking there. “My cancer was picked up at a very early stage thanks to the Bowel Screening Programme, and the service I have received throughout my treatment, both at ARI and at Inverurie, has been first class. Seeing the team locally is not only convenient but an indication the treatment I have received is having the desired affect.” Initially, clinics will run once a month and this will be reviewed after six months.
