Cardiovascular/Circulatory System
• Made up of the heart, blood vessels
and blood.
• Functions
▫ Carries needed substances to cells
▫ Carries waste products away from
cells
▫ Fight diseases
• Arteries- A blood vessel that carries
blood away from the heart.
• Capillaries- A tiny blood vessel
where substances are exchanged
between the blood and body cells.
• Veins- A blood vessel that carries
blood back to the heart.

Digestive System
• Functions of the Digestive System
▫ Breaks down food into molecules
▫ The molecules are absorbed into the
blood and carried throughout the
body.
▫ Wastes are eliminated from the
body.
•
•
•
•
•
•
Esophagus- A muscular tube that connects
the mouth to the stomach.
Stomach- J-shaped muscular pouch located
in the abdomen that expands to hold all the
food that is swallowed.
Small Intestines- Organ where chemical
digestion occurs.
Liver- The largest and heaviest organ, breaks
down substances and eliminates nitrogen
from the body.
Pancreas-Produces enzymes that flow into
the small intestines.
Large Intestines- Last section of the digestive
system where water is absorbed from food
and the remaining materials is eliminated
from the body.

Muscular System
• There are about 600 muscles in your
body.
• Your body’s muscles move because
of:
▫ Involuntary Muscles: A muscle
that is not under conscious
control.
 Examples: breathing and
digesting food
▫ Voluntary Muscles: A muscle that
is under conscious control
 Examples: smiling, turning a
page in a book

Respiratory System
• Functions of the
Respiratory System
▫ Moves Oxygen (O2)
from the outside
environment into the
body.
▫ Removes Carbon
Dioxide (CO2) and
water from the body.

Skeletal System
• The skeletal system has five
functions:
▫
▫
▫
▫
▫
Provides shape and support
Enables you to move
Protects your internal organs
Produces blood cells
Stores minerals until your body
needs them
• How many bones make up
your skeleton?
▫ 206 bones

Endocrine System
• Function of the Endocrine
System
▫ Regulates body activities by
producing chemical
messengers in glands.
• Endocrine glands- produce
and release chemical
products directly into the
bloodstream.
• Hormones- the chemical
product of an endocrine
gland.

Nervous System
• Functions of the Nervous
System
▫ Receives information about
was is happening both inside
and outside your body.
▫ Directs the way in which
your body responds to this
information.
▫ Helps maintain stable
internal conditions.
• Neuron- cells that carry
information through your
nervous system.
• Dendrite- carries impulses
toward the cell body.
• Axon- carries impulses away
from the cell body.

Integumentary
System
• 7 Functions of the skin
▫ Covers the body
▫ Prevents the loss of water
▫ Protects the body from injury,
infection, and ultraviolet
(UV) radiation
▫ Helps to regulate body
temperature
▫ Eliminates wastes
▫ Gathers information about
the environment
▫ Produces vitamin D
• Layers of Skin
▫ Epidermis- The outermost layer of the
skin, it is thin and does not have nerves or
blood vessels.
▫ Dermis- Lower layer of the skin located
below the epidermis and above a layer of
fat.
▫ Fat- The layer if fat protects the internal
organs and helps keep heat in the body.

Excretory System
• The excretory system
is the system in the
body that collects
wastes produced by
cells and removes the
wastes from the body.
The removal process
is known as excretion.
