Acquisition Lesson Plan Name: 6th Grade Dates for the Lesson: Topic: Unit 5 Force and Motion Unit 5 Force and Motion / Key Learning: The students will understand how gravity and moving magnets produce electricity. Unit Essential Question: How does gravity and moving magnets produce electricity? What do students need to learn to be able to answer the Essential Question? Assessment Prompt 1: What effects gravitational force? Assessment Prompt 2: How does magnetism produce an electrical force? Activating Strategy: (Hook and Link; Anticipatory Set; Vocabulary) AP #1 – Take 10 minutes and split class into groups. Pass out various types of magnets to each group. Let student experiment with their magnets. Discuss findings. AP#2 –List items they use that take electricity. How would your life change if suddenly there was no more electricity? Key vocabulary to preview: Section 1 (AP 1): gravitational force, electric current, speed, velocity Section 2 (AP 2): voltage, current, resistance, ohms law, electromagnetism, magnetic force, electric charge Teaching Strategies: Prior Knowledge, graphic organizers, vocabulary 4 square, vocabulary pictures Graphic Organizer: foldable (compare/contrast), concept map Instruction: (Step by step instructions for the lesson) Don’t forget to THINK PAIR SHARE, INK PAIR SHARE AND SUMMARIZE! AP #1 Activation strategy for AP#1. Introduce but don’t worry about mastery of the following items: speed, velocity, gravitational force, electric charge, magnetic force, gravity. Speed and velocity experiment using matchbox cars and tracks Electromagnet and compass experiment to describe how moving electric charges produce magnetic forces. Electric charge- discuss static charges. Use balloon and various types of cloth. Which makes the most charge? AP#2 *Don’t forget to Pair Share* or * Ink Pair Share* Summarize OFTEN!!!! Activating Strategy for AP#2- (before you begin, make sure you go over all rules of “lab work”) AP#3 Don’t forget to Pair Share* or * Ink Pair Share* Summarize OFTEN!!!! Complete the activating strategy for AP#3. Teach the following for more mastery of the topic: electromagnetism, voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s Law. Measuring Electricity worksheet page 50. See Mrs. Davy Electricity and Magnetism book pages 20-26 Complete the Applying Math section of page 21&24 Electromagnets- see page 45-48,50 Show an electromagnet (see Mrs.Davy) Video (For additional information see the Motion, Forces and Energy book pages 8-13) Assignment: Student learning map completion. TAG Question, Graphic Organizers, Quiz. Summarizing Strategy: Test, compare / contrast, AP quizzes, summarizing and paraphrasing in groups. Standards Covered: See Wiki Space
