Make a poster that conveys a message about
electricity.
Example: Safety with electricity, or where it
comes from, or insulators and conductors.

Write a Story
Imagine what daily life would be like without
electricity. How would people without it solve
problems that require a power source?
Write a story about one day when you had to solve a
problem that needed a power source and you did not
have electricity, include what did you and how.

Math Problem of the Week
A teacher wanted to buy some science supplies for her class. She
wanted to set up a center in her room where students could explore
magnets during their free time. She looked in a catalog for science
supplies and found those prices.
Item
.
Quantity
Cost
Large bar magnets
set of 2
$10.95
Small bar magnet

$2.75
Large horseshoe magnets

She has $50.00 to spend. What materials would you recommend she
buy for the science center? Remember, you can only spend $50.00,
and you want to have a variety of things for students to explore.
Write a short paragraph about why you chose the items you did.

Name that Insulator….Name that
Conductor
Ask one students to name an object.
The next student identifies it as a
conductor or an insulator and then
names a new object.
Each student participating takes a turn.
Keep the pace quick as you can and
continue around the room. If the group
disagrees about whether the object is a
conductor or an insulator, students’ can
use a conductor detector to find out.

Take a light bulb that has burned out, have an adult break the globe,
and discard the glass.
Look closely for wires that connect the filament to the tip and sides of
the metal part of the bulb. Look to see the complete circuit through
which the electricity flows.
Write about your findings.

Where’s the Electricity?
Where’s the electricity in your home? Take a tour of your
home and count the number of:
Item
Lights

Appliances
that
use
electricity
Wall outlets where you can
plug things in
Wall switches for turning on
lights
Be sure to talk with your family about safety when using
electric appliances. Write your family safety rules below.

Math Problem of the Week
The students in Mrs. Ray’s fourth grade class had a question:
Do all brands of batteries last the same length of time, or do
some kinds keep on going after the others run out of energy?
The students decided to do an experiment. They agreed they
should use brand new C-cells for their test., Here is a list of
the C-cells they got.
3 Charger industrial strength C-cells
3 E-Z Volt alkaline C-cells
3 Amp-Champ alkaline C-cells
The students connected each cell to a motor and let it run
each day while they were in class, and unhooked it at night
when they went home. They kept track of the numbers of
hours each motor ran. Here are the results they recorded,

1. Based on the data, which brand of cell would you buy?
(show your work here) _________________________
2. Explain why your chose that brand.
