Teaching students about the different human body systems is one of my favorite things to do! But after I teach it, they
always need some interactive ways to review. This activity should be done by students to review/summarize what they
learned. There are MANY fun ways to teach the information! I particularly like to break the class into teams of 3-4
students and assign each team a different system. They then research that system and become experts, teaching the
rest of the class about their system. As part of that project they can sketch the system on a full-scale outline of a person
or even build the system 3 dimensionally. As the students listen to the presentations of one another, they can do this
activity to summarize what they are learning. Alternately, they can do it for homework to show that they understood
the systems. Here’s what to do:
1. Provide the students with the puzzle pieces
2. Tell them what to do with the pieces. Options are:
a. Just color code each set of 3 that goes together and don’t cut anything out
b. Cut them out and glue them onto the table provided, matching each system’s name to the organs and
job of the system
c. Cut them out and glue them into a journal/notebook. We notebook lots so I like this option
I have provided a key to the activity on page 5. Obviously the kids can put the systems in any order, as long as they
match the system name to the organs and job. I’ve also included a picture of the activity completed in a student’s
journal (below). It fits nicely on a single page of a composition book.

Class Period: ________
Role
Organs
Cut along dotted lines & then glue these onto the table provided, showing which organs are in each system and what each system’s job is.
KEY ORGANS—bones, joints, cartilage,
tendons
Muscular
Job: COMMUNICATES—Receives
signals from body (senses, etc.) &
coordinates a response, tells other
systems what to do
KEY ORGANS—mouth, salivary glands,
pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small
intestine, large intestine, liver, gall
bladder, pancreas
KEY ORGANS—kidneys, ureters,
bladder, urethra
Cardiovascular
KEY ORGANS—heart & vessels (veins,
arteries, capillaries)
Skeletal
KEY ORGANS—nasal cavity/mouth,
pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi,
bronchioles, alveoli, lungs
Job: DELIVERS—carries food/oxygen
& hormones to all cells & waste
products away
Job: PROTECTS—filters/traps
pathogens & makes white blood cells
& antibodies to fight disease
Job: COVERS—keeps internal parts in
and outside stuff out, maintains body
temp, protects tissues below
Endocrine
KEY ORGANS—hypothalamus,
pituitary gland, pineal gland, adrenal
glands, ovaries, testes, thyroid,
pancreas
Digestive
Urinary
Job: CLEANS—filters/cleans blood,
removing cellular waste, maintains
water balance
Job: EXCHANGES—trades oxygen for
carbon dioxide, bringing in O2 and
removing CO2 waste
Respiratory
KEY ORGANS—lymph nodes, spleen,
thymus, bone marrow, appendix,
tonsils/adenoids, bone marrow, skin
KEY ORGANS—heart, diaphragm,
tongue, sphincters, smooth muscle
around vessels & digestive organs,
skeletal muscles for body movement
KEY ORGANS—skin, nails, hair,
sebaceous and sweat glands
Immune
KEY ORGANS—brain, spinal cord,
nerves (sensory lead to brain and
motor from brain to muscles)
Job: CONTROLS—secretes hormones
that target cells/organs & tell them to
do certain jobs
Job: MOVES—moves materials
around the body, allows body to move
& position itself & makes heat
Integumentary
Job: SUPPORTS—makes blood, stores
minerals, protects internal organs &
allows muscle attachments
Job: NOURISHES—breaks down food
into nutrients & absorbs them into
blood, removes toxin taken in through
food or drink
