Global Science Class Assignments and Homework Magnetism Topic 9: Magnets and Magnetic Fields - Chapter 14-1 –: Due Date____ 1) Read Chapter 14, then on a piece of paper titled “Chapter 14 Magnetism Vocabulary” define each of the following Key Terms for all of Chapter14, which are listed on pages 462, 468 and 475 (11 words). Arrange your work in a table with 3 columns as shown below. Term Definition Example/Diagram/Analogy 2) On a piece of paper titled: “Magnetism Cornell Notes”. Create a table in which you change each of the red AND blue headings for the entire chapter into a question and then answer the question as shown below. Begin on page 462 Magnetism Cornell Notes 3) Copy Figure 14-4 from page 465 and then next to it copy Figure 14-5 from page 466. Underneath the diagrams write a three part paragraph explaining: 1) What Figure 14-4 demonstrates; 2) What Figure 14-5 is explaining; 3) Why the Earth’s magnetic poles are not the same as its geographic poles; 4) Explain how the Earth’s magnetic field protects us (based on video) and what will happen if the magnetic field is gone. Title your paragraph” The Earth’s Magnetic Field” How the Earth is Similar to a Bar Magnet Figure 14-4 Figure 14-5 Four part paragraph 4) Answer the section 14-1 Review Questions from page 467. Topic 9 continued: Magnetism and Electric Currents, Section 14-2 5) Copy Figure 14-8 from page 469. Underneath the diagram write a paragraph titled “The Relationship between Electricity and Magnetism” where you will explain how electricity and magnetism are closely related because an electric current forms a magnetic field around them. So basically electricity creates magnetism. The next part of the paragraph should explain how a magnet can create an electric current. When a wire and magnet move across each other electricity will flow in the wire. So electricity creates magnetism and magnetism creates electricity. 6) The “Right Hand Rule” explains the relationship between the direction of an electric current and the direction of the magnetic field around the current. Copy Figure 14—7 from page 469. Underneath the figure right a short paragraph where you explain the Right Hand Rule in your own words. Title your work “The Right Hand Rule”. 7) Complete Section Assessment 14.2 from page 473. Topic 9 Continued: Section 14-3 – Electric Currents from Magnetism 8) Title a paper “ Electromagnetic Induction”. In the center of the paper define Electromagnetic Induction from page 474, and then write a paragraph titled Faraday’s Law under which you will copy Faraday’s law from page 474 and then copy Figure 14-3 along with all the captions. Then copy Figure 14-14 along with all of the diagram captions. 9) Title a paper “How a Generator Works”, and then copy Figure 14-15 from page 476 along with the diagram captions. Underneath the figure, write a paragraph titled “The Importance of Generators” in which you explain in your own opinion why generators are important to our way of life. 10) Title a paper “How a Transformer can Change Voltage ”, underneath that copy Figure 14-17 along with the diagram captions, and then copy ALL of Figure 14-18 from page 479 along with ALL of the diagram captions. 11) Complete the Section 14.3 Review questions #1-15 from pages 480 - 481
