Dear BSH Member, On behalf of the Programme Committee of the British Cardiovascular Society, I am delighted to be building the programme for the BCS Annual Conference, 8 – 10 June 2015 in Manchester. The aim of this mailshot is to highlight the heart failure content of the meeting to BSH members, although of course it is likely that as many heart failure specialists will attend the meeting for the “non-heart failure” aspects of the meeting as for the “heart-failure” aspects. The theme of the 2015 programme is ‘Hearts and Genes’, and we are delighted to announce that Professor Robert Winston will be giving this year’s Opening Ceremony Keynote Speech, entitled “Where are we going with molecular medicine?" This will be followed by a new-style BHF “gene-to-bedside” session focussing on Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (facilitated by Professor Hugh Watkins) and BHF/UKGTN sessions on the new gene panels for diagnosis of inherited cardiovascular disease. Sessions of particular note to those with an interest in heart failure include: Prof Robert Winston Emerging medical treatment of valve disease: Monday, 10:45 - 12:15 Chairs: Dr Bernard Prendergast and Dr Gerry McCann Talks: Prof Hugh Watkins Aortic stenosis; a disease of calcium homeostasis? - Prof Catherine Otto ACE inhibitors for aortic valve disease? - Prof Chim Lang Drug treatment of acute heart failure in aortic stenosis? - Prof John Chambers Pulmonary hypertension after left sided surgery - Dr Gerry Coghlan Update in acute heart failure: Monday, 10:45 - 12:15 Chairs: Dr Mamas Mamas and Prof Iain Squire Talks: What is acute heart failure? - Prof Andrew Clark Trials of acute heart failure therapy - Prof John McMurray National heart failure audit - Prof Theresa McDonagh NICE guidance in Acute Heart Failure - Dr Suzanna Hardman Innovations in heart failure therapy: Monday, 13:45 - 14:45 Chairs: Dr Alexander Lyon and Dr Simon Williams Talks: Telemonitoring for heart failure - Prof Martin Cowie Vagal stimulation: nectar for heart failure? - Dr Jay Wright Prof Andrew Clarke Stem cell therapy for heart failure - Prof Anthony Mathur Heart Failure in the U.K. – How are we doing?: Monday, 16:00 - 17:00 Chairs: Prof Andrew Clark and Dr Mamas Mamas Talks: Treating acute heart failure: New NICE guidance - Prof Martin Cowie Managing chronic heart failure: A new paradigm? - Prof John McMurray Reducing heart failure readmissions - Dr Simon Woldman Prof John McMurray The heart in systemic disease: Monday, 16:00 - 17:00 Chairs: Dr Sara Thorne and Dr Sarah Clarke Talks: Amyloid and the heart - Dr Simon Dubrey Malignancy and the heart - Prof Simon Ray Innovations in Cardio-Oncology: Monday, 16:00 - 17:00 Chairs: Dr Alexander Lyon and Dr Stuart Rosen Talks: Translational insights into anthracycline cardiotoxicity - Dr Kim Linton New therapeutic strategies to protect the heart from cancer drugs - Dr Helen Maddock Surveillance with cardiac biomarkers to predict cardiotoxicity - Dr Daniel Lenihan Innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiomyopathies: Wednesday, 08:30 - 09:30 Chairs: Dr Costas O'Mahony and Prof Hugh Watkins Talks: New insights into pathogenesis and risk stratification in dilated cardiomyopathy - Dr Sanjay Prasad Gene therapy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: targeting the cause - Prof Lucie Carrier Pathogenesis of familial restrictive cardiomyopathy - Dr Marco Mongillo Poster Session (09:30 - 10:00): Abstract Category - Valve disease/pericardial disease/cardiomyopathy MDT Live 3 - Heart Failure: Wednesday, 10:45 - 12:15 Moderator: Prof Andrew Clark Case presentations: Dr Paul David Callan; Dr Parminder Chaggar; Panel discussion - Panelists: Dr Ceri Davies; Dr Guy MacGowan; Mrs Samantha Breen; Mrs Dawn Lambert; Dr Geraint Morton Discussion of evidence/literature Panel/Audience interaction Case conclusion Announcement of the results of the BSH Board Election CCP Session 2: Wednesday, 10:45 - 12:15 Chair: Mr Alan Keys and Mr Trevor Fernandes Talks: Finding all the FH patients in your practice - Prof Steve Humphries Gene Therapy for the Failing Heart - Dr Alexander Lyon In addition to these core sessions there are a number of ‘Hot Topic’ Sessions of specific interest taking place in the Education Hall, Hot Topic - Zone 3 (heart failure, devices, imaging): Novel risk stratification markers for HF - Dr Kenneth Wong Clinical trials update in heart failure - Prof John Cleland Exercise in heart failure: how and why? - Prof Christi Deaton Role of TOE in the patient with heart failure - Dr Anita MacNab Ultrafiltration in acute heart failure - Dr Peter Cowburn Who and when to refer for heart transplantation - Dr Steven Shaw Indications for CRT and or ICD therapy in heart failure - Dr Gerald Carr-White Optimisation of CRT therapy - Dr Amir Zaidi LV non-compaction: diagnosis and management - Prof Steffen Peterson Myocarditis: diagnosis and therapy - Dr Christopher Miller ARVC: diagnosis and risk stratification - Dr Matthias Schmitt Advances in the management of Kawasaki disease - Dr Jane Burns Cardiac amyloid/iron and the restrictive cardiomyopathies - Dr Lisa Anderson Sodium and water restriction in heart failure - Dr Paul Kalra Anticoagulation in heart failure - Dr Lindsey Tilling Peripartum cardiomyopathy - Dr Mark Belham Respiratory or cardiac dyspnoea? - Dr Piers Clifford HF-PEF or obesity? - Dr Mark Petrie Imaging in new-onset HF - Dr Andy Flett Dilated cardiomyopathy: idiopathic or specific? - Dr Joanne Simpson Current clinical role of CMR tissue characterisation - Prof James Moon New drugs for HF? - Dr Charlotte Manisty Future devices for HF - Dr Stephen Pettit Heart failure and COPD, beta-blockers and antagonists - Dr William Bradlow There is little doubt that there is an increasing - rather than decreasing - need for today's cardiologists to have a broad understanding of all the major subspecialist areas.
